Hi Newsgroup,
i have some problems with using threads and signals in one program.
In my program i have three threads running, one for checking a directory
at a specified interval to see if new data arrived, one waiting for work
and the main thread.
My problem is the following:
I want to shutdown the program via a signal, so i used the signal module.
I know, that signal handling mus be done by the main thread, the signal

Does anyone know the scope of the socket.setdefaulttimeout call? Is it
a cross-process/system setting or does it stay local in the application
in which it is called?
I've been testing this and it seems to stay in the application scope,
but the paranoid side of me thinks I may be missing something... any
confirmation would be helpful.

Threads and ThreadPool's
If I use a ThreadPool how can I tell when a thead in the threadpool has
exited? I don't want to set a global member variable I would much rather be
able to act on an event
Also (failing this ThreadPool issue) is it possible to create an array of
Worker Threads, can anyone illustrate with code please
Thanks

Well I wonder if my old brain can handle threading. Dose this code look
reasonable.

Hello,
I have a multithreaded windows NT service application (vb.net 2003) that I
am working on (my first one), which reads a message queue and creates
multiple threads to perform the processing for long running reports. When
the processing is complete it uses crystal reports to load a template file,
populate it, and then export it to a PDF.
It works fine so far....

Alright, based a on discussion on this mailing list, I've started to
wonder, why use threads vs processes. So, If I have a system that has a
large area of shared memory, which would be better? I've been leaning
towards threads, I'm going to say why.
Processes seem fairly expensive from my research so far. Each fork
copies the entire contents of memory into the new process. There's also
a more expensive context switch between...

Hi, I'm trying to build an IP Scanner inc c# for a specific port (80)
and for specific IP Ranges.
For example 24.36.148.1 to 24.36.148.255
My first step was to use TcpClient, but there are nothing to control
Timeout Connection... and I wasn't interested to wait 25-30sec for each
ip.
After some search, it's look like Socket was the solution with

Hi, I'm using vs2005 and .net 2.0. I started 2 threadpool threads. How do I
know when they're done with their tasks? Thanks.
ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem(new WaitCallback(PopulateContextTable));
ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem(new WaitCallback(PopulatAdTable));

Thanks.

"Instead of just waiting for its time slice to expire, a thread can block
each time it initiates a time-consuming activity in another thread until the
activity finishes. This is better than spinning in a polling loop waiting
for completion because it allows other threads to run sooner than they would
if the system had to rely solely on expiration of a time slice to turn its
attention to some other thread."
I don't get the "a thread...

Hi
I have to write a multi-threaded program. I decided to take an OO
approach to it. I had the idea to wrap up all of the thread functions
in a mix-in class called Threadable. Then when an object should run
in its own thread, it should implement this mix-in class. Does this
sound like plausible design decision?
I'm surprised that C++ doesn't have such functionality, say in its
STL. This absence of a thread/object relationship in...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
