Hello,
This is not a troll posting, and I've refrained from
asking because I've seen similar threads get all
nitter-nattery. But I really want to make a decision
on how best to invest my time. I'm not interested on
which language is better in *general*, just for my
purpose. My area of research is in CAD algorithms,
and I'm sensing the need to resort to something more
expedient than C++, bash scripting, or sed scripting.

I was building perl 5.8.2 on RedHat Enterprise Linux 3.0 (AS) today and
noticed that it included in it's ccflags "-DTHREADS_HAVE_PIDS." I am
building with -Dusethreads. With newer Linux distributions using the
Native Posix Threading Layer (NPTL), this isn't entirely true anymore and
is AFAIK unsupported (using a pid to signal/identify threads). I removed
it from my config.sh script and ran Configure -der. make test runs just
fine.

Hi.
I would like to be able to mimic the unix tool 'uniq' within a Perl script.
I have a file with entries that look like this

4 12 24 42 64 92 124 162 204 252

Hello everyone,
I'm a perl beginner. I created a piece of code starting a first thread which
in turn creates a second thread. Unfortunately the creation of the second
thread hangs the first one. Is there anybody who knows what's going on ?.
I decided to create fully OO software and I wouldn't like to go back into a
fork-based solution.
I also included my test application (I know there are no joins but it's only
for testing purposes)

Hi,
I am pretty new to building and installing Perl. Can someone help
explain the severity of the following Perl 5.8.4 build error message?

Hello,
I have a rather odd question. My company is an all java/oracle shop.
We do everything is Java... no matter what it is... parsing of text
files, messaging, gui you name it. My question is this... is Perl so
much better at parsing text files and outputing that we would see a
substantial speed increase? We process about 10 million records in
flat files a day for reformatting before putting them in a DB.
Also, when it comes to...

Hi,
I am facing the build problem while installing the DBD-MySql perl
module (ver 2.9008) using both GCC and CC compilers in HP-UX machine.
For the Build using GCC, the compiler error is produced due to the
unknown GCC compiler option "+DAportable".
For the Build using CC, the preprocessor error is produced due to the
recursive declration of macro "PerlIO" in perlio.h file.

So, I download the latest "stable" tar for perl (5.8.7) and try to compile
it on the Solaris 8 (SPARC) box that I administrate. I try all sorts of
different switches, but I can't get it to compile. I need it to be
compiled with threads.
Anyone have any wisdom on how best to do this?
Here's a transcript of my latest attempt. It's long; you might want to
skip to the bottom, where I try "make" and the fatal errors start
happening.

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

The next Access Europe User Group meeting will be on Wednesday 1 May 2024 starting at 18:00 UK time (6PM UTC+1) and finishing by 19:30 (7.30PM).
In this session, we are pleased to welcome a new presenter, Adolph Dupré who will be discussing some powerful techniques for using class modules.
He will explain when you may want to use classes instead of User Defined Types (UDT). For example, to manage the data in unbound forms.
Adolph will...
