Oracle Forms - Migration

15 New Member
Hi all,

We have an application written with Oracle Forms 5.0 and report builder 3.05. We are using Oracle 8i as a database. We have around 50 forms and 10 reports.

I'm in a process of analysing and evaluating to upgrade/migrate or rewrite this application with a new tool in order to convert it on a web application.

I have made few search and i found these 2 choices:
- Migrate this application to Oracle Forms 9i or 10g

Or,

- Convert this application to ASP.NET with a tool provided by ATX Software: http://forms2net.atxso ftware.com/site/Welcome.do

Based on your knowledge and experience, I would like to have a better idea about this issue.

Which method is the best in matter of cost (time & effort) and performance ? and what do you recommend ?

Please, do not hesitate to give me any another recommendation.

I really appreciate your help.

I had applied ATX for converting fmb to asp. however, ATX does not solve
many oracle built-in, business logic well. you can use some migration tools
to easily migrate fmb, rdf, pll, mmb to 9i/10g without much cost.

I have used the ATX Forms2Net tool to migrate my oracle forms (6.0) to ASP.NET and my reports also.

It's fine for the pl/sql code and the .NET code is very nice structured.

I'm thinking to migrate my reports also but at this moment is only possible to .NET Reporting Services.

Cheers,

Hi,
If you are still looking for Migrating Oracle forms2Microsoft technology then do let me know.
A Brief about our Tool and Service- Forms2Net:- http://forms2net.atxsoftware.com

Forms2Net is the only migration tool for the automated conversion of Oracle Forms applications to the equivalent in Microsoft .NET technology.
Forms2Net is an ATX Technologies reengineering tool that automatically converts Oracle Forms applications to the equivalent .NET (C#) ones, with approximately 75% rate of automatic conversion.
From the reengineering and transformation theoretical viewpoint, Forms2Net falls in the general category of language-platform conversion tools.
Forms2Net handles : (a) the resolution of the semantic gap between the pair of source-target languages and (b) the resolution of the dependencies (e.g., API dependencies) on functionalities provided by default by the source platform or on programming idiosyncrasies of the source platform (in this case Oracle Forms).

Forms2Net targets the application layer only. Oracle Forms applications are transformed from their monolithic structure into a new architecture according to the Model-View-Controller pattern. Future maintenance and modification efforts, as well as deployment to a service-oriented architecture, become significantly easier.

All migration techniques have to address the semantic gap that separates the original from the target environment. Forms2Net incorporates a sophisticated reengineering approach whereby code structures are identified and transformed into the desired target using the MVC architectural pattern. This powerful feature provides three major advantages over a 1-1 syntactic mapping.
The output of Forms2Net is a full Microsoft Visual Studio solution

This is an old post so I am responding to people who have this question more recently as I hope the person here already completed their Migration / Conversion / Upgrade. The other solution is to go with Oracle ADF Java.

Oracle's recommend path is to get off old un-supported versions of your Oracle Forms and Reports (2.3, 3, 4, 4.5, 5, 6i, 9i) and get on to supported version (10g, 11g). Once you are supported, you can start to develop new code in ADF (Application Development Framework) Java. This is a really great way to go because ADF was designed with Oracle Forms developers in mind. It is a lot easier for a Forms developer to learn ADF then straight Java or .Net

And when your Project dollars open up, maybe you start to move certain pieces of your applicaiton to ADF. The best part is that Forms and ADF can co-exist on Oracle Application Server or Web Logic Server.

This phased approach is clearly the easiest tranisition and it can get you on supported software very fast. If you an Automated Migration Tool like PITSS.con to do you Forms to Form Migration, you could be testing the application in days. Most customers begin walking through the app with the users after about 5 days.

Hi, I'm a developer for a software application vendor, and our application makes use of a customer-maintained Oracle 8i/9i database. We've had a customer request to support DB2 database, and I'm looking into the feasibility of migration. Our application runs on NT Server and, the DB2 database would be in some cases on a separate AIX machine, in other cases on an AS/400. There are two problems we are running into, both relating to our...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers.
