Solaris expert needs to break into as entry-level Oracle dba

Hello all:

I am a Solaris Unix Administrator with 6+ yrs. of experience in major
companies who also has experience with AIX. Since I am good at Unix I
would like to move into Oracle world, preferrably as an entry-level
DBA. I have started preparing for the first OCA exams but am looking
for an entry-level Oracle job. (even if it is an intern its fine for
now).
How do I break into Oracle world? Although I have Unix certifications,
an engineering bachelors, some shell scripting etc, I find that nobody
is willing to let me in. I just need to get my foot in the door.
Please advise.

Oracle is completely different from Unix. A good command of SQL is
mandatory. Likely your problem is going to be you have insufficient
programming experience.
Most competent DBAs have originally worked as developer.

Thanks, Sybrand. I do have cert in c/c++ programming and have worked
as a developer for a bit. But I still didn't get any answer to my
original query. I have, in past and at present am studying SQL and
that would be not my main problem.

Any craetive suggestions that might help me break into the field?

If I were in your shoes, I'd target smaller firms that may be in the
market for a combination systems administrator/ DBA/ developer. Firms
that aren't large enough to have full-time systems admins, full-time
DBA's, etc are going to tend to be a lot more receptive to someone who
has excellent systems administration credentials and is excited about
learning the DBA tasks.

The other option is to look for a position as a database developer
(i.e. SQL or PL/SQL programmer). Many larger organizations will pull
their entry-level DBA's from among their better SQL developers.

Hi, We have a couple of web applications where data is updated on a weekly basis. The data entry is done in a vb access application which is kept internal. The database is uploaded to the web which has a web interface for clients to check their records. Thus dat a gets updated once a week. In a new application, I would like to build a single web based application, where the data entry is done from the same application and clients would...

Hello. Sorry about the length of this post. I am trying to implement a hash table for my chess program, and decided to try using the VC++ . NET (Dinkumware) version of hash_map. The role of the hashtable is to store HashEntry objects, which contain information about chess positions. A BitBoard is just an __int64, and this is used to determine the hash key. I have not shown the definition of class ChessPosition, but all you need to know is...

I have a AIX backup of DB2 (8.2) and i was told i needed to have a unix OS installed to be able to restore this database. So now i have installed Solaris 10 (x86 hardware). I copied the DB2.tar file to a folder i created in /export/home/db2, and unzipped everything. My issue is now when i try to run the 'install or setup' files, i get a message in the terminal window that says 'cannot execute'. I made sure to give the entire folder and all...

I'm in the market for a server to run some python code which is optimized via psyco. Sun T2100 servers come with Solaris 10, which comes with python pre-installed. Since those servers use the 64-bit Opteron box, I would assume that the Python is a 64-bit version. (Does anyone know whether this is true/false?)

Software Needs Philosophers by Steve Yegge, 2006-04-15. Software needs philosophers. This thought has been nagging at me for a year now, and recently it's been growing like a tumor. One that plenty of folks on the 'net would love to see kill me.

On windows machine it works well, on Solaris not. The windows and solaris path into c language is the same. I'd like to say also that real value works correctly also if they are

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
