Reading flat files from pl/sql

This might seem strange, but I would like to know if it is possible to
open a text file (for reading) from pl/sql.

Ora8i on RHL7.3
Thanks,
ph

from a stored PL/SQL procedure? yes, as long as it's on the database
erver -- look into the UTL_FILE package

or are you referring to reading a file from the client machine? if so,
what's your development tool?

note that in 9i you could also look into external tables (MetaLink note

Hi all, I'm sure this is a popular question that comes up every few months here. Indeed, I've looked at some of the past postings, but I would like to ask things differently. Basically, I'm using a flat file to storing data. I have to do this because mySQL is not installed on my web server, and I am not the root user. The amount of...

Ok, I wanted to ask this separate from nospam's ridiculous thread in hopes it could get some honest attention. VB6 had a some simple and fast mechanisms for retrieving values from basic text files, which in turn could be simply and easily maintained with notepad. I understand the benefits of XML, really, but in the case of configuration...

I have to read data from a flat file with millions of records. I wanted to find the most efficient way of doing this. I was just going to use a StreamReader and then break up the input line using Substring as there are no delimiters however I have a spec for the format of the file. Is using Substring the only way to do this or is there a more...

I'd like to be able to update HTML files online and this is my only requirement. Flat Files: advantage: attach some PHP code at the top of each file that allows the file to be opened and edited disadvantage: the...

Hi, I am kinda new to programming and am in the process of implementing an application which is expected to parse/read data from flat files and display errors to the user about missing/invalid data. It would be required that the application opens the file in any editor(ultra edit) and take the user to that point of the file, which needs...

Hi Folks, I'm used to a UNLOAD command that allows me to dump to a named flat file the results of any SELECT statement. Hence one can build a single SQL file which contains multiple SQL statements each of which 'unloads' to its own unique file. unload to 'file1.txt' select * from ...... unload to 'file2.txt' select * from ...... and so...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. ...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For...
