I was wondering how many Oracle DBAs out there have bosses that are
complete doe-doe birds? My current boss is a beaut -- has absolutely
no concept of Oracle, keeps flipping back and forth from wanting RAC
and Data Guard, and is totally anti-UNIX of any kind. He just doesn't
take Oracle seriously and he just wants to dump it on any server like
an Access DB and ignore it. Today he calls me in and says "forget
about RAC and DataGuard -- we'll use Oracle Fail Safe!".
I'm at my wits-end with this guy -- doesn't want to use RMAN, just
exp/imp for production databases, won't move off 7.3.4 for a couple of
DBs. This guy is driving me nuts -- I'm almost ready to take those 3
oracle software CDs and ram them down his throat sideways.

You have our sympathies. Perhaps he should use the mauve database, it uses
more ram. On a serious note, try to get him to concentrate on the problem
and business needs NOT the solutions. If he doesn't understand the business
needs or business problems that need to be solved then you can't have
solutions of value. Try to get him off the BSO kick. (bright shiny object)
Ask him questions about business needs and get him off on that.

Not sure whether it'll help in your case - one customer had a boss like
that & I gave him a copy of O'Reilly's Oracle Essentials. It helped
with that one. That's fairly easy reading (even management can
understand it), accurate and high level enough to keep them away from
the actual code.
Other than that - any particular shade of mauve he likes?

Been there.
If your Moron is like the one I had, he will get upset the first time
Oracle has a hiccup and you will get blamed when YOU cannot recover
the database.
I'd get the heck out, as fast as you can! No good will come of this,
and you will only serve as the idiot's scapegoat.
Good luck. . .
Hmmmm...
Are you Dilbert and is he the point-haired manager? :)
Now more seriously, I can't help you with your boss, man. The only advice I
can give to you is: "Get a new job."
But you can end with an even worse boss! ;)
The world is not fair,

You want to limit his reading material.
get him some colouring books.

I'm a manager where I work(one of the cogs in a food service company).
The boss needed one of us to become the "tech guy", and part of that is
writing small windows programs for the office. He wants the development
work done in house, and he knows I am in school for a CS minor. I know
basic C++(Part 2 of that is in the fall), and I will be taking Java 1
in the fall also. What is the easiest way for me to make windows
programs that will do...

My boss has been adamant that SELECT DISTINCT is a faster query than
SELECT all other factors being equal. I disagree. We are linking an
Access front end to a SQL Server back end and normally are only
returning one record. She states that with disctinct the query stops
as soon as it finds a matching record. Both of us are relative novices
in database theory (obviously).
Can someone help settle this?

Guys,
My boss has been keeping himself busy reading MySQL marketing pubs,
and came at me with a few questions this morning regarding PostgreSQL
features (we're currently moving to PostgreSQL).
While I don't think either are really that important for our
situation, he wanted to know specifically whether PostgreSQL supported
SQL:2003, and what sort of capabilities PostgreSQL has to scale across
multiple CPUs and hosts (multithreading,...

Hi,
I have a big problem with a Visual C++ 6.0 function that retrives the
logical drives and types in the local system.
This function works perfectly on Windows 98, NT, 2000, XP and 2003, but I
have tested it on Windows Vista and it doesn't retrieve remote network
drives. It must retrieve a string with the drive letters and a string with
the drive types (2=removable drive, 3=hard drive, 4=remote drive, 5=CD-ROM
drive, 6=RAM drive)
I...

For a lot of IT people -- everyone from software developers to tech
writers to network support folks -- telecommuting is the best personal
option. They get a flexible schedule, they aren't bothered by noisy
cube-mates, they can code during whichever hours work for them (with
the help of IM and email), and so on. Many of us are lucky enough to
live this lifestyle; I include myself in this set, as I've been a full
time telecommuter for...

Hello:
I had an hour-long discussion with my boss today. Last night, right
before I dozed off, I realized some of his code resulted in duplicate
processing. I tried to explain it to him and he kept saying, "I'm
afraid to say it's 'OK' to change it because everything I did was for
a reason." Well, I know better.
My boss' old code is written in some cryptic C file with Oracle
precompiler macros barfed all over it. Once I figured out how...

Hello guys!
Bear with me, I am a newbie.
She is the Data Warehouse manager. She has about 50 users to use the
Oracle database from M$ Access via ODBC connection. All those users
have only SELECT privileges on certain tables. I built all the roles
and users for them and they work fine.
Then she asked "Why do YOU let them see all those system tables?",

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
