I am trying to learn iSQL*Plus for the 1Z0-007 exam. I am having a bit of
problems with the substitution variables. My understanding was that they
behave as in SQL*Plus, but my experiments beg to differ.
I log on to the sample schema 'hr' and enter the following statements:

Hi,
I have an SQL assignment to do and at my school we use SQL *Plus there
however I don't have Oracle at home, where I would like to do the work ,so I
was wondering whats the easiest way to get an SQL environment up so I can
code in that then just paste it into SQL *Plus later.
I don't really want to install Oracle on my home pc and I was wondering if
there are other IDE's for SQl that would fit my need for this.

Hello!
We have a set of individual .SQL scripts which we would like to
execute against a MS SQL Server 2000. Is there any way to have ISQL
utility (or any other means) to execute all of them without having to
establish a separate database connection for each script:
isql -Ux -Py -Ss -i script1.sql
isql -Ux -Py -Ss -i script2.sql
isql -Ux -Py -Ss -i script3.sql

I am trying to use a command line program to run a stored procedure
that generates output in a comma-delimitted format. Somehow, ISQL or
OSQL always wrap the lines at 256 characters. I believe this has
something to do with the column width switch (-w). But enlarging the
column width to 800 characters max still doesn't help. The following
is a stored procedure that is essentially doing what my stored
procedure is doing:

We've got a couple of scripts that we routinely run on several SQL
servers, and they usually run fine. But we're trying to run them on one
particular server, and we're running into problems. I'm no expert with
SQL, but two DBA's who I work with have spent hours on this and they're
stumped, so I don't feel so stupid. Maybe someone here can help.
Basically, we've got a .bat file that calls a .sql file. Within the
..bat file, isql is called...
