Sorry for the repeating theme, but I was hoping for some guidance. I'm
currently a Siebel consultant/integrator. I've done my time
administering envionments and running Oracle SQL, PL/SQL, and SQL*Loader
jobs.
In an effort to stop travelling and to evolve into a steady career, I
want to pursue becoming a DBA role. The problem is common, however.
I was wondering if you could give me some pointers on what I should or
shouldn't do.
* Investing to become an OCP DBA is going to be a hefty out-of-pocket
expense, so I'm not sure it's the best way to go. Lots of money for an
uncertain return.
* Spending time dorking on a linux box would give one experience, but
it's not marketable when it comes time for interviews.
I would like to know what the group thinks. Mind the 'no-spam' in the
email if replying directly to me.. thanks.

Your apologies are insincere. You could just have searched Google and
would have gotten more than enough 'guidance'

you would be considered entry level and there are no entry level DBA
jobs. There are no entry level developer jobs. Economy is bad. Market
is bad. if you have a top secret security clearance, you have a shot.
short of that dont invest any money in this.
OCP helps landing a job if you have experience. helps get raises too.
If you dont have experience its useless. dont fall for any of the
scams trying to get you to take people's training. there are no jobs
out there for entry level or 'junior' DBAs
its easy to test. take your current skill set. put a differnt name on
your resume and put what you would consider to be a 'career change'
resume on the web and state you are certified. see what responses you
get. only responses will be people not reading your resume, actually
looking for Seibel, or trying to use you to find someone else.

Zack,
First goto Oracle Technet and download yourself a database: http://technet.oracle.com/software/p...i/content.html
Same place you can download a full documentation set.
Then using something like this as a guide: http://www.orafaq.com/faqdbacv.htm
And start learning!
First manual to read is "Database Concepts" it's a bit dry, but though
it out - it's worth is.
And .... who knows once you have the knowledge, the job-market might
have changed.
Good luck.

This is contigent on what you said ....
Depending on what you are ready to give up and how far you are ready
to stretch to find a job there could be one out there for you.
Your consulting experience could be used to leverage your job
search.
It may be hard to say that there are NO openings for junior DBA,s.
With your siebel experience and some PL/SQL you could find a way in
and why not request from the start your interest in assisting the dba
from where you can grow .
In the meantime invest your time in Oracle as suggested earlier on in
the thread while searching for a spot to squeeze in.
(This is exquisitely expressed in the Pidgin language ["chuk
head"]Get your head inside)

Using Oracle 8i enterprise on win 2000 (sp3)
Installed the standard configuration & whenever I make a connection it
takes about 10 secs. It's running on a P1900 with 1gb Ram so no reason
there for slowness.
Once I'm connected the queries work pretty much instantanously but to
connect using SQLPLUS, Toad, ODBC, OLEDB all take about 10 secs. I
connect using OLEDB from Visual Basic development environment & after
the 1st connection...

Hi all,
Being that so far I didn't get an answer to my below problem on the
Oracle newsgroup, I figured it couldn't hurt to try here.
While at my current job I've been working with mostly SQL Server, now
I need to connect to our Oracle Financials running on HP-UX. The
Oracle DBA set me up as a user and installed the Oracle client on my
box and I have the tnsnames file, but I still can't establish a
connection to the database from my...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:

Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
