Two instances of Oracle client on one PC

Does anybody know if it is possible to run two different instances
(and potentially different releases) of Oracle client on one Windows
2000 PC? I'd like to do this so that I can have one that I know is
stable, and a second to apply patches and test.

I imagine if I install into 2 different directories the install will
work, but are there any ramifications, such as with ODBC Data Sources
& drivers, etc? After I am done with both installs, what will happen
when I go to Start --> Programs --> Oracle Installation Products?
Which installer will I get?

Note that this is Oracle client only, not server. Thanks,

Bill

Since you have not specified which 2 Oracle versions... I would assume
8i and 9i.

You can install both releases of Oracle client (or server) on the same
machine as long as they are installed in separate homes.

ODBC drivers from both version will show up in the ODBC driver list.

Default Oracle home installer will be used. You can use Home Selector
to change which ORACLE_HOME\bin directory appears first in your
system path.

I did just as suggested, and it seems to be working OK. I have 2
separate Oracle homes, and use the Home Selector to switch between
them. Thanks for the advice Rauf.

Hi Bill,

This all works fine, but gets a little more complicated and irritating slow when you go to Oracle 10g.

I work with Oracle Locator Express, much more easy.

Hi. We had a PC that had Oracle Client 8.0.5 and 8.1.7 installed in Default_Home (c:\orant) and Default_Home1 (c:\oracle). A third party package, installed certain components of Oracle Client 9.0.2 in another Oracle Home which it called ora92 (c:\oracle\ora92). Since we no longer need Clients 8.0.5 and 8.1.7, I decided to uninstall all Oracle clients and install Oracle client 9.0.2. I used Oracle installer to

I want to connect to an oracle database from my client pc, OS is win2k or XP. Can I connect to an oracle database without having the full oracle client installed? If so what would be the minimum install on the client to get this connection? Oracle version is 9i? I found the .NET Managed Provider for Oracle and it looked like it still needed the oracle client? The machine is running XP Pro with all the latest service packs, etc. I must access an Oracle database so I installed the Oracle client stuff. I can query Oracle from a Windows app, no problem. Using the exact same code (copy and paste) into a Web app I get the following error "Error while trying to retrieve text for error ORA-01019". Security I thought, so I use Impersonation on the Web site, then the aspnet_wp.exe crashes with "The...

I need to connect to an Oracle database. I've never done it before. I see that with framework 1.1 you had to download ODP.NET from Oracle's site in order for the framework classes to even work. I tried that quickly, but the file is 400 MB, and the the installation asks for all kinds of things in order to install. Now I'm very confused. a) Do you still need ODP.NET with framework 2.0? b) Do you need to download and install other...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
