Hi,

Folks,
We have an SQL statement that was coded in an application many years ago
(starting with DB V2 I think). When I upgraded to UDB 8.2, the optimizer
does not use optimal path to access the data.
It takes about 4 minutes to get the data. In previous versions it was
instantaneous.
What do I need to do to increase the performance?

I am trying to run an update query and am having problems with null
values.
Starting from the beginning - I created a new table from my original
table, selecting distinct combinations of these rows:
Family, Genus, Species, Variety, Author
I then added an ID field to uniquely identify each of these rows.

My boss has been adamant that SELECT DISTINCT is a faster query than
SELECT all other factors being equal. I disagree. We are linking an
Access front end to a SQL Server back end and normally are only
returning one record. She states that with disctinct the query stops
as soon as it finds a matching record. Both of us are relative novices
in database theory (obviously).
Can someone help settle this?

I do not know if this question is regarding table design, queries, or
