How do I set up an email server on my laptop

2 New Member
I have an old windows xp sp3 laptop; which i recently decided to convert to a server.

I have xampp for windows installed.
My internet provider blocks port 80, and my ip is assigned dynamically. So I reconfigured apache to port 6121 and my router to foward the port and also got a dyndns.com domain name which updates the ip dynamically.

This all works fine.

Now I want to be able to send email from my laptop. That is use it as an email server.

I don't know whether xampp comes with an email server. If it does, how does one configure it? If not, how would I go about setting up an email server?

My ISP also blocks port 25.

I am clueless, and any help would be greatly appreciated.

xampp does not contain an email server - you'd have to add an additional package to your build.

I would recommend looking through sourceforge.net and freshmeat.net for the best type of email server that fits you - one that's mostly pre-configured or one that you can customize (to be able to custom configure specific ports).

What distro are you using? Ubuntu/Debian both have apt-get for command line (sudo apt-cache search mail) or synaptic through the GUI; SuSE has YaST (which I'm not incredibly familiar with, but there are a few people here who use it). RHEL/FC has YUM...

All of those are package managers that help install programs - they greatly lessen the pain of building your own from source and finding a mail server through them would probably be a good idea.
