Wireless Networking

friend of mine has an issue with his desktop connecting to his belkin wireless router. he has a belkin 54g desktop card installed, drivers up to date, working fine. router firmware up to date (two other hosts on the network are working fine). nothing popping up in event viewer or manage computer. he cans ee the ssid but when he types in the wpa-psk key it just seems to disappear down a black hole, ive tried setting static addresses, everything. channels are the same. if you plug in network cable, its fine! ive tried (Everything I deem) possible, and nothing, not even anything close! any ideas? all desktops are xp home service pack 2.

cheers!

Have you guys tried the card in one of the working stations?

I'd also recommend typing out the WPA-PSK in notepad or something and copying and pasting, just to make sure it's correct.

Can you reset the router to default, (saving the current config first, of course) and then configure WPA again? (Possible subnet or number of connections allowed issue....?)

Greetings, RevBooter!

You may need to go to Starbucks, or a local cafée that allows free connection, or the Train station to see if your wireless notebook finds a connection. If it does, your network may be competing against other networks, as mentioned here. Which could mean that your router may need to be a bit more robust, in turn, you'll need to get a quicker card to accept the load.

On a lighter note, and this is before you try any of the above, you can try deleting your wireless network adapter, shut down and power up again. Your notebook will want you to reinstall. After installation, you should pick up a signal. This works if your notebook was previously seeing a network other than yours and had cahed that old network key. Try this, then the above, see what pops up...

Talk soon!

Quite the contrary, and hopefully it's ok to leave it... You provided sound info here RevBooter...apart from what I have written, retarting one's router is another way of picking up scarce signals. Thanks for at least adding the solution found:-)
