How to improve school internet connectivity?

1 New Member
I would appreciate if anyone can help with this issue.
I need to find a temporary solution to improve the network for a small school with high traffic and usage (300-400) . We have the internet slow down on two days where we have the highest traffic of students using their devices. I know we need to upgrade to the enterprise level equipment but currently, we have only home networking routers: Asus, Netgear 7000 and others. On heavy days, it is impossible to do anything since all students are online with their equipment.

What is the immediate solution to solve the bandwidth issue, so school can operate until the end of the semester?

Do we need to upgrade to enterprise level solution or open mesh type solution will suffice? Any specific recommendations ? Thank you

In my corporation, the number one bottleneck for bandwidth is at the hardware level. If your hardware can't support the throughput of the circuit, you are only hurting yourself. The second, is improper use of the internet. Example: Streaming websites such as ESPN, YouTube, Netflix, etc. Throttling the bandwidth allowed to such sites that could be considered "off-limits" will increase performance if your hardware is capable of maximum circuit throughput. I hope this helps!

The wouls suggest implementing a proxy server so you can control internet access and who is allowed see wich websites like youtube ect. It sounds to me you have an Abuse problem. You can also run antivirus scans on your computers as bots will also cause high internet usage

Hi, I'm writing an application that needs to know if an Internet connection is available. Basically, I want to have something similar to what a lot of email clients have, where the app can work either in "online" or "offline" mode (it keeps a cache of downloaded info, so it can work without a connection if needed). The basic problem is this: it downloads info (RSS feeds) from a variety of sources. Any one (or more) of these could...

We are developing a wireless device that will need to transmit small amounts of data to an internet server. Although the packet sizes will be small they will be moderately frequent (sent every 10 seconds). I'm wondering what network connectivity options I have available? Currently I've identified: 1. Wifi - Problem with this is not all locations the device will be in have wifi, so it will add to the cost of our customers. 2. GPRS - GSM...

I am trying to make sure that the local connection is up. I have presently been using the NetworkChange.NetworkAvailabilityChanged Event for this. Is there a better way to do this? Also, I want to test to see if the Internet Connection is up. I need the Internet to be up for the Web Services I am calling. Is it better to test the Internet Connection through Pinging an IP Address (I presently do 3 ping failures for it to be down) or...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
