Networking a printer across two hubs

1 New Member
I'm a volunteer in Laos trying to help fix an NGOs network. I have the following working...

PC - Hub - PC - Printer

but cannot get PC - hub - hub - PC - Printer working.

I only have them networked as windows XP workgroup, as DHCP ( and internet traffic) is currently handled by a third party machine.

Hoping there is an easy way to get this working.

Try running Network Setup wizard from Control Panel and during the setup, select Share file and printer

This way, windows will automatically setup all the devices related to printer itself
It might help

Please post the hardware and software versions of both hubs (manufacturer, model, and software version).

got 3 questions,

have you tried to link the 2 hubs together by cross over cable?

how are you setting up the printer config? (manual IP would be the best solution *Not using DHCP*)

how are you trying to connect the printer in windows printer wiz?

Hi Chunkymoves,

Try to "PING" all those connected nodes. The ping command can be very useful.

  1. ping <ip_address>

There is an easy way. We just have to help yez find it.

Chances are, the two hubs aren't new enough to autonegotiate cable wiring and you need a crossover cable instead of a regular one. Test this by pinging between machines and seeing if the pinging works with 1 hub, the other hub, then both.

If pinging works, make sure both groups are on the same subnet -- on windows, type ipconfig at a DOS prompt and make sure both are in the same network range.

Make sure DHCP isn't causing problems.

Maybe describe your setup in better detail in case you're doing something subtle like plugging one home-grade network access point into another via the WAN port, which could be sticking a bunch of firewall rules in your way (including ones that block printer sharing / SMB traffic).

I am not sure if someone can help me, but please bare with me for a second... My problem is to retreive the Client's Printer Collection for a web application and then print to the client's default printer or a printer of his choosing. I know Asp.Net is basically server-side. So I was thinking of using an ActiveX Control which is downloaded on to the client's machine and then the ActiveX control Reads the client's printer settings and use the...

My project is to write two seperate programs. A Operating Room Scheduler Program, that calls a seperate Printing program on a command to print. I am left with one problem. Both programs have to connect to the host via TCP/IP. Both programs are setup to check if the sockets are defined, and if not to connect through a router as the second option. My company is doing away with the router, so essestially there is no choice for the...

I work with databases and some of my backup files are 30-100 gigs in size. I currently use the FastCopy utility to copy files from one server to another. (This is needed when I need to transfer a DB to a different server). FastCopy says its 30 to 50% faster than Windows file copy. I read somewhere that the windows kernel defaults to 4mb/sec throughput for copying. Is this true? Is there a faster way or some utility to copy files?...

In my application I need to give the user the ability to print duplex if the selected printer supports duplex printing. Many of the printer options do not make much sense in my application, and many of the settings in the common printer dialog would have a negative impact on my printing process. To handle this strict printing constraint on which my application imposes I do not want to show the common print dialog. I want to be able to...

Hi, I'd like to programmatically change the "Keep Printed Documents" option for a printer. The option is available in the Windows UI by going to the Advanced tab on the printer's Properties dialog. Turning it on causes Windows to save copies of printed docs in the printer queue (marked as 'completed'). In my research I've come across references to WMI. Is that the best way to do change the option?

hi, i have been trying to send a printer-ready data to an unknown printer to print. the reason why the printer is unknown is that i do no wish installed any printer driver. so at the end my printing would have to bypass the printer driver.. i have read several article on sending file directly to a printer, but i could not understand how could i get the printername from the ports(especially when there is no driver install)? I have downloaded the code described in Microsoft article Q154078. I am trying to send raw ZPL (zebra barcode printer) code from Microsoft access. It works just fine if I hard code the actual data in the string being sent to the printer. However, if I prompt the user for data or if I insert data from a particular record/field in a form Access crashes/closes on its own. I have included the code below, if anyone has any suggestions,...

Okay, I'd like to create a print-friendly website, so I've been reading up on how to create print-friendly pages (without duplicating my site, of course, by having separate versions of each page).... Apparently one can use JavaScript or CSS for this.... Using CSS, it seems that the "trick" is to use * media="print" * in the <linktag.... So if I have a hyperlink to a print-friendly page...um, well, what's

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
