I've been writing software on the mac since 1987, but am brand new at

I'm running MySQL server on a WinXP box at home. I have a cable
modem/router. I've set up port forwarding on port 3306 to the machine
running MySQL. I can connect locally just fine, but when I try to
connect from a remote location using:
mysql -h xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -P 3306 -u root -p mysql
I get:
ERROR 2003: Can't connect to MySQL server on 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' (10061)

Hi all,
I am having real problems allowing a client to connect to sql 2000
through enterprise manager.. I have tried all sorts but to no avail:
From our local network all works fine.. Using the adsl line.. Even if
i try and connect to the external IP and use login details..(As
opposed to connecting local and using windows accounts) I can ping and
telnet the server and port.

I just installed mysql on linux. If I open a terminal, su to root,
then type "mysql", I am able to connect to the server and run my
queries.
If I exit out of su so that I am my own id (baisley) and type "mysql",
I get this error: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/home/data/mysql/mysql.sock' (13)
Any idea why? mysql.sock has full permissions (read/write/execute), so
