large file copy: invalid MS-DOS function

I am trying to copy large files (1 GB and larger) from my hard drive. After
600 MB, I get "cannot copy file: blahblah.avi. Invalid MS-DOS function" or
something to that effect. If I try to view the file it opens and gets about
2/3 of the way through and stops. I tried drag and drop, copy and paste and
using the command prompt with no success.
Any help would be appreciated, thank you
