wdbForm gridview hyperLink not binding correctly to sql column

In a gridView I created a hyperLink field and bound it to one of my columns
in the dataSource associated to the gridView. Below is the asp source for
this:

<asp:HyperLinkField DataTextField="INSTANCE2"
NavigateUrl="spaceGrowthSchema.aspx?instance={0}"
DataTextFormatString="spaceGrowthSchema.aspx?insta nce={0}"
Text="instanceLink" />

At runtime in the html source, the hyperLinkField NavigateUrl still has {0}
whereas the second dataTextFormatString field has the data value correctly
populated to the bind variable in each row. Can someone spot why this is
happenning? I tried all quotation possibilities but this did not help.
