reinstall .net framework for update

Maybe this forum is a better place for my question. I tried to install the
latest critical update from MSFT and it failed. I contacted MSFT and they
They had me remove the net framework with the Windows installer clean up and
download and install three files. They were the net fremework redistributalbe
package 1.1, the sp for it 1.1 and the new service pack KB886903 9the one I
cannot unstall that started all this. When I saved the first one is was not
sure to save to C:\ or C:|Windows but I selected C:\ first and installed the
first download (the redistributable program). Then I tried the second one
(patch)and I get an error message that it cannot find file"tmp53.tmp" and
will not install. I uninstalled again and saved to
C:|windows with the same result. Do you have any suggestions for me? I do
not even know what .net framework is or if I even need so I am really in the
dark and must rely on you MVP's that have been so helpfull to me in the past
with other issues that have arisen. If I go into the Administrative tools,
for Net framework I have version 1.1.4322.573. MSFT never answered my reply
that their suggestion did not work. Can you help?
