Which technique to use calling DB on App server

The current solution is that I access my DB thru an application server.
The clients instantiate CAO remoting objects executing on the server
In that way only the app.server needs to be an Oracle client.

Is there other techniques accessing the DB via an app.server without using
Remoting? Any suggestions?

Best Regards
Tomas
