New to DLL files

JP
Hi all.

I have a general idea of what a DLL file is (a file of data & functions
called at run-time instead of link time) and now I would like to begin
understanding how to use them. I've googled DLL and have no idea where to
start on this.

So my question is this: Does someone have a good site that has newb info on
creating DLL files and why & when you use them?

Cheers!

DLL in the pre-.NET era was a library that was linked dynamically to an
application.

A DLL in the .NET era has a great relation with the notion of Assembly.

You should consult the documentation about what an assembly is. When
you hold an understanding about what an assembly is you will be able to
understand when/how to use a dll.

Search in Google Assembly + DotNet

Hope this helps ...

As Tasos points out, there is more than one meaning. You have the general
principle. In practicality, you can include any functionality you want in a
DLL. So how do you decide what to put into a library and what to put in
your main application? That task is one aspect of 'partitioning' which is
(my definition) an activity where you decide what cohesive responsibility
will bind together each class, each package, and each assembly. Layering is
one very popular method of partitioning. (See Layers pattern by Buschmann)

Hope this helps,
