In your opinion :
novices should start with Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition Beta or
with
Microsoft ASP.NET Web Matrix ?

When do you want to start using your new skills?

According to an MS employee post on www.asp.net/forums yesterday, there will
be a go live license with beta 2, which should be out by the end of the
year. If you feel you have quite a few months before you can use your
skills, then use Visual Web Developer 2005. Realistically the 2.0 Framework
jobs will appear a few months after the release (1Q 2005), so you are
talking about a year before you really can apply your skills. Personally, I
think this is good, as you can get really good at development in a year, but
this may not be the schedule you desire.

If not, Web Matrix is a better option. If you can get a copy of Visual
Studio .NET, it is a better option for the current 1.1 Framework.

If you are a student, academic versions are quite economical compared to the
full product. To learn, the Pro version is fine. I would say the Standard
version is fine, but with many limits (as such, I do not recommend Visual
[language name] .NET Standard).

If you are not a student, there is always the 60-day trial (and free
"online" trial):

If you are serious about your studying, 60 days gives you plenty of time to
learn a lot of .NET. If you need more time, you can always rebuild your
machine. ;-> If you start making money, make sure you get a legally licensed
copy, as you should support those who make you money.

Just how is it possible to get an affordable copy of VS.NET? It costs over
$1000. I am trying to teach myself .NET on my own time. I know VS.NET is not strictly needed for .NET dvelopment but all the books I am reading assume you are using it and it is an essential skill needed in applying for a job.
