Unfortunately I'm a little upset, I went to one of the free .Net
seminars today that Microsoft holds.
At the end of the seminar I had just one question.
There is only one thing I want to know.
Nut it seems that the answer is being left incredibly complex and
nobody cares. How to send a notification to the client?
I was told to use SQL Notification Services -- he did not expound on
the answer whatsoever.
Then, based on my google search it seems that SQL Server Notification
Services may not even be pursued much by MS anyone and even when it
was it was (for SQL server 2005) is was a paid subscription service.
I am not building an enterprise app at the moment, I just want to send
one simple tiny little wake up bit to the client just to avoid
polling.
The closest thing I've found is this demo: http://www.devx.com/dotnet/Article/38814/1954
which I have running locally but I somehow have the feeling I'll run
into problems when I try to deploy it in real life, since MS is not
interested in this type of thing.
I tried getting on ASP.Net with this question, but unlike almost every
other forum in existance, I guess their approval process takes time so
I wan't able to get registered immediately.
I am only looking for a straightforward way for a server to notify a
client to prevent polling. Is the link above the best way to do it?
Obviously I can use lower level coding but then who nows how Vista
will react. Does anyone at MS care that this is clearly a necessary
use of technology? They seem to live in their own little happy
community, but it's clearly a gated one.
