OK, so I've gotten into a philosophical disagreement with my colleague at
work. He is a proponent of the Template Method pattern, i.e.:
class foo
{
public:
void bar() { do_bar(); }
protected:
virtual void do_bar() {}
};

Hello
I am using asynchronous delegates to make a call to a COM ActiveX object, but even though the call occurs on a separate thread, my UI is still blocking.
If i put the thread to sleep in my delegate call, the application is well behaved (no UI freeze), but the call to the com object causes the UI to lock up
Do I have to manage calls to an ActiveX object differently than using the BeginInvoke and a callback
A sample of the code I...

Hi,
In the override of the Paint-method of a DataGridTextBoxColumn I want to
show an image with BitBlt, to see what I can gain there on performance.
The problem is: It doesn't show me the image in the DataGrid-Cell's, but a
black background...
Does anybody has any idea what I am doing wrong?
Thanks a lot in advance,

Hi all,
I'm sure this is really really easy but I do need some help.
I'm writing a java stored prcedure to manage the assignment of IP
addresses to mac addresses for a network device database I've got.
Basically a user fills in a template detailing information about
themselves, the location of the pc and its mac address. The SP takes
this input info and scans a database table that stores the assigned ip
addresses in a subnet looking...

Hi,
I have an application that allows functionality extension by third party
DLL's. All the specs for building these DLL's are targeted to c++, with
demo.h files containing "extern" statements, etc.
However not really knowing c++ I would rather use C#. Could you point me to
documentation/information on how to use this c++ information to properly
construct my C# routine to connect properly?

Hello,
following problem: At program end or release an assembly a serial device
should get a final exit sequence. How can I do this?
With Dispose() it's no problem, but this assembly is used in a com
interop dll and it must be guaranteed, that the final sequence is send
to the serial device, when the calling application dont send Close() or
Dispose().

Hi,
I am currently writing a graphical control(a list control) that can
display a picture followed by some text and to do so I first calculate
an item height and then I really draw.
I was wondering if it would be a good idea to merge the two
methods(calculating and drawing) knowing that when calculating we
actually simulate a drawing.
Basically my control is called the first time to calculate the height of
an Item (MeasureItem) and...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

In this session, we are pleased to welcome a new presenter, Adolph Dupré who will be discussing some powerful techniques for using class modules.

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
