C#-APP: Error handling - multiple methods

4 New Member
On a webform button click, I have wired a SQL INSERT command along with the sending of an email. Right now I have:

try
{
myCommand.Conne ction.Open();
myCommand.Execu teNonQuery();
message.SendMes sage(to, from, subject, body);
Response.Redire ct("~/complete.aspx") ;
}

If the INSERT command fails, it will go to the catch block, but I'm trying to avoid the insert command going through successfully and then the email failing.

How do I make sure that if the email doesn't get sent, the INSERT command will NOT occur?

Thanks!

Hello, I'm currently using Application_Error method in Global.asax.cs to handle errors. Recently, I heard about Page.ErrorPage and plan to use it for handling errors on certain pages. Are there any major difference in using these methods? My concern is mainly on the restrictions imposed on using these method.

Hi I'm currently designing a new web application in .Net. I've pretty covered everything, apart from error handling. There seems to be a few different way to do this, but something I've read often is that loading all your code with lots of try / catch blocks is not the best way. My application is made up of a number of different sub applications. A CRM Package, with financial services, compliance and commisions etc etc. Each part has...

Hello, I am looking for guidance on best practices to incorporate effective and complete error handling in an application written in VB.NET. If I have the following function in a class module (note that this class module represents the business layer of code NOT the gui layer): Public Function Test(ByVal Parm1 As Integer, ByVal Parm2 As Integer) As SqlDataReader ' Declare the SQL data layer class Dim oSQL As New...

Hi all I'am moving from Visual Foxpro and have a question regarding "best practice" error handling in vb .net. In VFP I have always used a "central" error handling object in order to have a easy and reusable way of handling all errors in a program. The VB 6 coding examples I have seen there has always been error handling code in each program module.

I am considering general error handling routines and have written a sample function to look up an ID in a table. The function returns True if it can find the ID and create a recordset based on that ID, otherwise it returns false. **I am not looking for comments on the usefulness of this function - it is only to demonstrate error handling** There are three versions of this code. David Fenton says under the earlier thread "DAO...

I'm interested in an idiom for handling errors in functions without using traditional nested ifs, because I think that can be very awkward and difficult to maintain, when the number of error checks gets about 3 or so. It also gets very awkward in nested loops, where you want to check for normal loop processing in the loop condition, not errors. Yes, you could put some generic exit flag in the loop condition, but when you're simply done if...

I'm working on an admin page for a SQL Server 05 db. The page is in ASP.NET 2.0/C#. The db has multiple tables with foreign keys/constraints. I have multiple SqlDataSources and GridViews, which are doing the select/update/delete methods. I manually did the Insert method for each Gridview and I am able perform error handling on it. Textboxes for data to add <asp:Button ID="btnInsertNewService runat="server" Text="Submit"...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
