Cryptographic service fails to start

A machine running XP Home fails to start the cryptographic service. When
attempting to start from the services menu it responds with error 2: the file
specified cannot be found.

I am unable to identify which file it is referring to however I have run
through various procedures from articles found in the discussion forums,a on
the ms web site and including www.updatexp.com/cryptographic-services.html.

Due to cryptographic services failing to start no update will install.

After a bit of a brainstorm I decided to check thru the registry entires and
discovered some missing elements. If you have the same problem check your
registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACH INE\SYSTEM\Cont rolSet001\Servi ces\CryptSvc\Pa rameters

You should have entries for:
default REG_SZ (value not set)
ServiceDll REG_EXPAND_SZ %SystemRoot%\Sy stem32\cryptsvc .dll
ServiceMain REG_SZ CryptServiceMai n

Although all the files were present and the services registered because
these parameters were missing the service file to start was not defined.

Originally posted to microsoft.public.dotnet.distributed_apps with no response. Reposted here with additional thoughts. --- Hello, I'm writing a Windows service which performs some potentially long-running, uninterruptable processes. When the service starts, I create a separate worker thread to perform the work so as to not block the service control manager upon startup. The design quandry I'm running into though is how best

I have developed a service that monitors the CPU utilization performance counter and updates a table in a database. During the Service Start up, I attempt to connect to the database. I would like to report a Start up failure to the SCM (Service Control Manager) during Service Start up if the connection to the database fails. Also, if the connection fails, I would like the service to stop. How would I achieve this? I am coding in VB.Net.

I am creating a windows service that requires parameters to start. The service Startup Type is set to automatic therefore it starts when the computer is started or rebooted. However the service fails because the parameters do not persist. If the service is started manually and the parameters entered it starts and runs correctly. If the computer is rebooted the service attempts to start but fails because the parameters are not used to...

I have a number of services developed in C# (.Net), and they have been working fine for the most part. Recently someone reported that ipon occassion (originally rarely, but more frequently on some systems of late), there is an entry in the Event Log immediately after a boot indicating that the service failed to start after 30,000 milliseconds. Usually it starts fine when attempting manually after the boot. I instrumented the code to...

Currently I am having a problem creating a windows service that monitors a mapped drive for events (using the FileSystemEventHandler). I'm running an ASP.NET webapplication on a Windows 2000 Server SP4 machine with .Net Framework 1.0 installed. The ASP.Net application uses impersonation (windows domain account). This is needed for communication between two servers (some ldap stuff). Furthermore the application uses FormsAuthentication. At some point the FomrAuthentication.Decrypt method is called. At this point I get the following error:

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
