WCF Remoting and Thread Priority

The programming task is to run a simulation model, as a distributed
computing model, in the background on 250 departmental computers. I
intend to allocate work (per machine) into say "5-10 cpu second units"
of repetitive work, stealing CPU cycles when/where I can.

I have a service that uses WCF to host a remote object that performs
the allocated work. My objective is to have the installed service run
in the background and have no adverse effect on my users (they'
shouldn't notice the backgrond processing).

At service startup, I successfully can control the base priority using
the following statement(s):

System.Diagnost ics.Process p =
System.Diagnost ics.Process.Get CurrentProcess( );
p.PriorityClass = System.Diagnost ics.ProcessPrio rityClass.Idle;

The service appropriately reports having a "low" base priority in task
manager

However, when I have my remote object report its thread priority using

string priority =
System.Threadin g.Thread.Curren tThread.Priorit y.ToString();

The priority is reported as Normal (process priorityclass still reports
low/idle priority). This happens both when using WCF or the Net 2.0
remoting library to perform the distributed processing. So the thread
that the remote object is running under is running at a higher priority
than the base priority.

What I don't know is
a) Is this normal behavior, or behavior associated say with "remoting"?
b) If normal behavior, will this job have an adverse effect on my
user's computers. That is, would my remote object, noticably impact
the performance of their workstations?

Thank you for sharing you experiences...

Everywhere in documentation there are recommendations to use threads from thread pooling for relatively short tasks. As I understand, fetching a page or multiple pages (sometimes up to 50 but not tipical) from the Internet and doing some processing on those would be considered to be a big/long task for a thread from a pool. In our app it is possible to break the task into some small ones (thread per fetch and processing thereafter or event...

In vb6 it was possible to create an exe as an activeX exe and communicate between 2 apps. Now we have remoting which requires opening a tcp port to listen on, which seems kinda crappy cause another app might be using the same port. Is there an alternative way of communicating between 2 exes on the same machine? Thanks, Michael Culley

I ran into a situation where my Window Service had to process 100,000+ files, when I first noticed I needed to tweak various routines. Everything runs fine, but here's what I ran into: In the routine that loops through the file buffer: for (int i=0;i < _Buffer.length; i++) { // Code here

Hi, I'm new to .NET remoting and there's something I'm having real trouble with. Basically, I'd like to create a component that can act as a server and as a client (can send messages and receive them in asynchronous mode). Here's the situation just so you guys understand why I'm doing this (and maybe so that you can provide me with other options): I have an application that needs to save data to a remote database. The

I have a program that will act as an Remoting server AND client. This program can be loaded on one macine or it can be loaded on several machines. But it will only be one master program available, all the other is "clients" handling tasks. The master program will dellegate tasks. When the program starts it will ask if there is any "master" available on the network (a BROADCAST to all machines). If there is no master responds it will...

Hi there, I have been messing around with remoting in an attempt to create a "shared application" as mentioned in another thread by that name. I have created a singleton object just like the example in the 101 VB.NET examples. It works great, only 1 instance ever gets created and is shared by each client. I have a few questions though, * Can the singleton contain events? In such a way that when the

Hi, I'm using the remoting, and I have a remoting object that has a public event that other processes should register to it. But when the client process is registering to the remote event, it throw the following exception: System.Runtime.Serialization.SerializationException {“Cannot find the assembly Tester, Version=1.0.2164.27180, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null.”}

There's no way to set thread priorities within Python, is there? We have some threads that go compute-bound, and would like to reduce their priority slightly so the other operations, like accessing the database and servicing queries, aren't slowed as much. John Nagle

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development projectplanning, coding, testing, and deploymentwithout human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
