Sharepoint Bottom Line

I'm trying to extract some basic information about /Sharepoint/ from the
muck of marketing hype and technical documents.

Perhaps someone can help.

I think I can:

1. Set up a Sharepoint web site for free on Windows 2003.

2. Put a bunch of Word documents on it.

3. Allow people to connect to those documents over the web, using Word,
directly.

4. The would use the Tools, Shared Workspace option to load those documents.

5. If they change the documention, when they hit Save it's posted
directly back to the Sharepoint website.

6. Documents are locked (read only) while someone has them open for edit.
Are these statements correct?

Do you mean sharepoint portal server - of sharepoint services - pretty sure
you need a licence to put it on the internet, you certainly do for portal
server and a licence for SQL server if your accessing it over the web via
SPS.
2. Put a bunch of Word documents on it.
Yes
3. Allow people to connect to those documents over the web, using Word,
directly.
Yes, with the correct version of office on the client
4. The would use the Tools, Shared Workspace option to load those
documents.
One possible route, you can access a shared workspace from IE, from explorer
or from within Office
5. If they change the documention, when they hit Save it's posted directly
back to the Sharepoint website.

If they have the correct office version and access to the workspace
6. Documents are locked (read only) while someone has them open for edit.
if the document is checked out
Are these statements correct?

You'd get some very clear answers in the sharepoint group.

Got a sample of MS's "Advisor Guide To Microsoft Access" in the mail today - accompanied by a sample "Advisor Guide To Microsoft SharePoint". I skimmed both, but the SharePoint explanation is too abstract - it's going right over my head. Can somebody explain, in simple/concrete terms what MS SharePoint is? -- PeteCresswell

Hello all, I have to write a web part for a SharePoint 2003 server. We only have one SharePoint server, so developing directly on it isn't really viable.
