Expose library as web service correct pattern

1 New Member
I want to expose the whole functionality of a library through a web service. In order to do that of course I've created web methods for all public methods in this library. Because only public data and no logic or private fields is transferred through web services, I need to know what is the correct pattern for invoking the methods of the proper objects.

By now I've found two possible patterns:

1) Objects are created on the server and then passed to the client ( Of course now they have only data and no logic ) and when invoking a webmethod pass this object as a parameter so that the server now has object with the correct data and methods just invoke the method of this object.

The problem here is that only public fields are passed through web service and thus I need to expose all private data through public accessors so that all data needed for the logic of the methods is passed between the client and the server.

2) All objects are created on the server and stored in the session. When the an object is created only a corresponding ID is passed to the client so when it needs to invoke some method of this object

it calls a webmethod with this ID added as a parameter. Thus the server retrieves the proper object from the session and calls the method from it.

Which pattern is better and are there any other solutions?

Thanks in advance!

It is possible to expose an enumerated type from within a class library so that other projects referencing that class library will see it in the class's namespace? For example, if I have a class library called "foo" which has a public enumerated type called "bar" declared in a module of that class library, is it possible for a different project referencing "foo" to be able to declare variables of type "foo.bar"? - Don

I have some constant values in my web service that my client application will require. Having to keep server side and client side definitions insync is tedious. I am trying to do something like this: public __value enum Colors { Red = 1, Green = 2, Blue = 4, Yellow = 8 }; However, the resulting wsdl omits the actual flag values: - <s:simpleType name="Colors">

Hi ! I have developed a class Library with several classes and methods. Its working fine with a windows forms test application, but now i need to create a webservice that will expose those methods. Do i have to create a method signature replica to all interfaces and methods, that will consume the internal class library, like this: <WebMethod()> _ Public Function Method1() As TypeDefinedInClassLibrary 'Call Method1 in class library...

The services, talked here, are things used in IServiceContainer, IServiceProvider, etc. In my opinion, everything can be a service, and a service is generally used for providing specific features for service consumers, at design time. But, I think the cnsumers must completely know all aspects of that service. This sounds not good, and breaks the decoupling rule. So how to understand the role of Service, in a software engineering...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...
