A solution file is just an xml file.
you can open it with a text editor. if there is really no text in it
anymore, then the file got corrupted, and there is nothing you can do.

In that case you can create a new empty solution and add your projects to
it.
The solution file is the easiest to replace.

Btw, I hope that has taught you the value of using source code control or
taking back-ups
:-)

Sadly, the .sln file isn't xml - but it is text.

You are right indeed.
The project files are XML, but the solution file is just plain text. Strange
design decision.

If I have a class with a virtual method, and a child class that overrides the virtual method, and then I create an instance of the child class AS A base class... BaseClass bc = new ChildClass(); .... and then call the virtual method, why is it that the base class's method is called instead of the overridden method? How do I fix this if I don't know at runtime what the child class is? I'm using Activator.CreateInstance() to load the...

I have been developing a suite of assemblies over the past couple of weeks, and this afternoon somethign started misbehaving. If I do not run the IDE and compiler the code from the command line, the compilation seems to work properly almost all of the time. More on this later. If I launch one copy of the IDE, then I can usually compile the project at least once. At some point, the build fails reporting "Could not copy temporary files...

When debugging my current web project, in VS2003, I found I had lost the ability to drill down on watch objects in the Watch Window; I could only view the single value specific watch objects. Here's what I discovered. In addition to my main web project and several middle tier projects, I also added an "empty" web project in my solution (Add - New Project - Empty Web Project). This empty web project is what is causing the above...

I have a problem and I've been using a cheezy work around and was wondering if anyone else out there has a better solution. The problem: Let's say I have a web application appA. Locally, I set it up as C:\domains\appA. Locally, my IIS root points to C:\domains. I don't point it to C:\domains\appA since if I have an appB under C:\domains I wouldn't be able to get to it. So to access it via my browser I go to localhost/appA.

Hi All, I generated a WebForm and created a Virtual Directory for it IIS. But I got an error message (shown below) saying something like my app lacked appropriate privileges. David Wang replied to an earlier question about this issue, and he informed me that I needed to include my UserID in the "VS Developers" group in order to WebForm apps running under my account capable of accessing \\server\wwwroot$.

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
