get windows user name from .Net Web Services

1 New Member
Hi All,
I am new to web services programming and have the following business requirement which I would appreciate help with.

Scenario:
All users log onto Windows machine with standard Windows authentication. We want to enhance a current desktop application to call a WS and get a result back to the application (across the Internet, not in an intranet situation). We want to obtain the windows user name from the caller's machine and ip address so that audit data can be logged following the WS call. Specifically, we don't want to prompt the user for a username/password as it is OK that the WS call is anonymous (traffic will be restricted to being allowed between the businesses via a VPN), but we want to know which user is requesting the call and from which machine.

I have an application that is ISAPI and the only way to secure it is through NT permissions. I need to have a way to login to windows authentication so that when I get to the ISAPI application no boxes come up. I want an ASP page to sit between the user and the ISAPI application. The rest of my application is using authentication that is database driven and wouldn't want the users to know the userid and password. Is this possible? If so...

A quick scan of the group did not immediately reveal an answer to my questions so here goes. First let me describe my app and then I'll ask the questions. I am writing a Windows Forms App (not Web Forms) that serves as a thin client to some web services. In other words, the Windows Forms app will be installed on the client machines and that app will call web services that are deployed on my server.

Hi, I just wrote a test Windows Service that creates a text file on startup (please see my code below). The file is never created. Protected Overrides Sub OnStart(ByVal args() As String) Dim swLog As StreamWriter = File.CreateText("C:\myLog.txt") swLog.WriteLine("My Windows Service has just started.") swLog.Close() : swLog.Flush() End Sub

Hi All! I have a ASP.NET 2.0 site that works on the Windows 2000 Server. However, when I tried to view this site on my local Windows XP machine, I get "Server Unavailable". If I switch the Windows XP IIS back to ASP.NET 1.1 then I get the Configuration Error (which is understandable because I'm trying to run an ASP.NET 2 site with 1.1 framework). I can however view other ASP.NET 1.1 sites on my local Windows XP machine. It's only the...

Hi, Does anyone have any experience with single sign on for .Net windows applications or windows services? So the idea is to be able to use the user credentials from logging into windows to authenticate the user for using a windows application or windows service. I have found some information on the web on how this can be done for a web application (which relies on internet explorer for the most part) but nothing for windows...

I'm really starting to hate writing services -- or trying to, anyway. Why do I need to rename my project to the service name? Why do I need to set the "ServiceName" property to my service name? Why do I need to set a property within my code to the service name? Are all these required or am I just doing this for consistency purposes?

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
