PolicyException when running a .NET program across a network

Hey all,

I've got a .NET program that we've written, and since it writes to and
reads from the HD, it, of course, throws a PolicyException when we run
it across the network.

That's perfectly fine, and expected when running across the Intranet
domain.

However, some users think that this is a bug.
How can we tell the users that application is not intended to work over
a share/network when the application cannot get the permissions to run?

Am I stuck with writing a 'launch' application so that I can catch
PolicyException s?

I found this other thread on a similar topic, but with no resolution.

Thanks,
-Mezz

I have been learning really hard to understand this .NET security thing, but I still get overwhelmed with the abstractness. The hardest part is to understand *when* you get an SecurityException and *how* I would translate this into a simple-user-friendly messagebox. And *when* you get a PolicyException and I also want to translate this into a simple-user-friendly messagebox. The idea is then to start up some...

In my app I use some COM objects and as long as this app is on local C drive it loads fine. As soon as I copy the app to a mapped network drive it fails to load with "System.Security.Policy.PolicyException: Required permissions cannot be acquired." Why would that happen?

When using Visual c++ in Visual Studio.net, I am receiving errors "An unhandled exception of type 'System.Security.Policy.PolicyException" when trying to "build withoug debugging". I only receive this error when I(or students) save the project to the network. I can't seem to find anything on Microsoft's website. Is there a way around this? Or do all programs have to be compiled from the local drive? Thanks, Chris

We're in the process of writing a new Windows Forms app and the desktop support folks want for it to be run from a network share. I know it's possible (i.e., just have the framework on the clients and a desktop shortcut to the exe out on the network)... but is it really a good idea? What are some arguments for and against running a .NET Windows Forms client from a network share? Here is my initial list... I'd appreciate any additions,...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
