priority boost for thread in windows service

My application is a message gateway. It uses several threads to send, receive
and log messages. The send thread is time critical, transmitting emergency
stops.

Using default settings it takes too long to get a message out of the PC.
Currently running as a console app I have seen severe delays especially when
other applications are started at the same time.
The class lib when finished will be used in a windows service. So priority
boost doesn’t work as it needs a UI?

Which of the process and thread priorities should be set to which level?
When and how is this done? Can it be done from inside my code or do I need a
special setup routine?

thanks herbert

I have a program that is cpu intensive so I want to change it's priority to BelowNormal. The code functions without error, the VS Debugger shows the change but when I then go to "Windows Task Manager" and look at my process it still has a "Base Pri" of "Normal". What thing am I missing? Suppose execution of a particular thread T1 hits Monitor.Enter(obj); //critical section and blocks at the first line. (ie someone else is in the critical section) Now suppose more threads T2, T3... try to enter the critical section and are blocked. What is the order that the threads get to enter the critical section?

Hi Everyone, I was thinking of how to do this for a while now and I cant get my head round it so I though I'd ask the experts! :-) What I am doing is reading in large amounts of data over TCP and saving it to disk. I receive alot of data from alot of clients so I do all this without processing the data. When a piece of data from a client has been completed I want to do

The programming task is to run a simulation model, as a distributed computing model, in the background on 250 departmental computers. I intend to allocate work (per machine) into say "5-10 cpu second units" of repetitive work, stealing CPU cycles when/where I can. I have a service that uses WCF to host a remote object that performs the allocated work. My objective is to have the installed service run in the background and have no...

I have this wxWidgets OnButtonClick event handler, that apparently holds a lock on all widgets in my form, but this event handler is supposed to end a thread in the background - while that thread is supposed to update widget content. So if I want to wait for the thread to end in the event handler, I have 2 threads waiting on each other - with the one in the background waiting to access the widget content. My current workaround is to...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
