The next meeting of the XML Users Group will be held on Wednesday, June 21,
2006 at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) at 2000 Florida Avenue, N.W.,
Washington, DC 20009-1277. The meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. and usually last
approximately 2 hours. If attending the meeting by Metro, get off the Dupont
Circle stop and walk
north to Florida Avenue...turn right.

John Tucker, NOAA, Coast Pilot

Coast Pilot is a series of nine books averaging 500 pages each,
which augment information portrayed on navigational charts with
text information directed towards recreational and commercial
vessel navigation. It is published by the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration. s Office of Coast Survey. A single
book costs $26.00 US. Each volume is updated and republished on a
yearly cycle. Currently the books are also available as pdf
files for free download on the Office of Coast Survey official website.

As a computer researcher for OCS, I have developed a demonstration
of some of the capabilities of XML by structuring, encoding and
augmenting the information in xml of one chapter of one book of the
US Coast Pilot and storing it in a native xml database/webserver.
The look-and-feel of the legacy document can be closely recaptured
from the new form. However the XML form supports a great variety of
new functionality. The chapter may be presented in its entirety by a
web browser connected to the Internet. As a web page, the chapter now
includes real-time hyperlinks to current weather information, to the
US Code of Federal Regulations, and to two sites offering graphic
views of cited geographic locations, the ENCDirect GIS site maintained
by OCS and the geographic names lookup site of Google Earth. A user in
search of specific information may now query the database for the
first
reference to a geographic name, or for every paragraph containing a
particular text string, or use a spatial query to return each
subchapter which contains a tuple of latitude, longitude geographic
coordinates (when an index map and a query can return appropriate
subchapters in the order of the planned route.)

The ultimate goal of this demonstration is to provide to navigators,
compilers, cartographers, and administrators an example showing how
using xml can more easily, cheaply, and accurately encapsulate
information, facilitate reuseability, timeliness, ease of
processing and greatly increase availability.

OCS produces, processes and warehouses a huge aggregate of
geographic-based information. The success of this demonstration
leads to the ultimate conclusion that great benefits may be
achieved by the use of GML encapsulation for all of it.

From I-66

- Continue east on I-66 to Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Bridge. This
places you on Constitution Avenue.
- Take a left on 18th Street, NW and head north. Continue north to
Connecticut Avenue.
- Turn left (North) on Connecticut Avenue to Florida Avenue.
- Right on Florida Avenue. AGU is 1/2 block on the right at the
corner of 20th & Florida Avenue.
