best technology for remote connection

hi

in a data entry scenario where there is a 2 mb connection between
locations i was wondering which technology would be best for the
purposes between an asp.net web forms application and a vb.net winforms
application

in my researching i came accross an interesting article by Paul D
Sheriff
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/de...ignwebdesk.asp

this article was useful but had an interesting point that i always
understood to be the opposite, he said of the disadvantages of web
forms -

'Performance can be slower in a Web application because you are sending
both the data and the screen design each time you request an HTML
document. In a desktop application, the interface is rendered locally
once, and just the data is brought across a fast network connection'

I have always heard the mantra that web forms or 'thin clients' are the
only way to go because they are much faster for data transfer

Firstly and most importantly - If there were 4 people using a database
simultaneously, would there be significant differences in speed and
network bandwidth usage using a vb.net winfroms application on the
users computer connected to a sql server database over a 2 mb
connection or using asp.net 2.0 web forms?

Secondly - I would also like comments about how this might effect
network traffic, the database would never have more than 4 simultaneous
users, and is not a mass data entry program, more a management program,
each user may manage or alter 10 records per day at maximum levels

Thank you hugely in advance for any advice and assistance you can offer
me

I built some remote services, a couple singletons and one single call. On the client side I thought I'd save on connection latency by caching the remote connection in a shared variable. Create it once, then use it as long as my app was running, rather than take the hit on creating and destroying it. The issues that one has with ADO connections staying open didn't seem to apply here. However when there is a lot of client requests,...

I've read some of the posts on this subject but let me add this little twist to the subject's question- I can appreciate the utility of doing screen caps off of other websites with PSP or PhotoShop to get some of my website's graphical elements, but really I'd rather mostly generate my own graphics. Are these tools (I haven't looked at them yet) useful for authorship of original work? So far (this is kind of sad, really) to get exactly...

I am starting a project that may be suitable for vb.net, using windows forms. I want a rich client, thus win forms vs web forms. Most users will access the app data over a LAN, but some will be remote users, accessing via vpn. I could use terminal services for this but am thinking that an alternate technology like remoting or web servies could be viable. - Rich client - N-Tier - LAN & Internet clients (via VPN)

Hello, I want to put (incrementally) changed/new files from a big file tree "directly, compressed and password-only-encrypted" to a remote backup server incrementally via FTP,SFTP or DAV.... At best within a closed algorithm inside Python without extra shell tools. (The method should work with any protocol which allows somehow read, write & seek to a remote file.) On the server and the transmission line there should never be...

I have a client that wants me to code a simple application as a prototype. The catch is that he wants to use this application at several different stores while being able to share each store's data. He also want the application to continue to function in the case that the internet is down for any reason. I have my own theories as to how to accomplish this shared data environment, but I'd love to hear your ideas about sharing data...

Hi All: I am looking for general directions on "the right way" to do something, which is very critical to my application. I want to communicate with a SQL server database on a Windows Server (in the future it could be a Linux MYSQL server, but I don't know for sure). My application is a desktop application and at various times it may need to communicate with the server to select, update records etc.

I am developing C# win form app to work with remote database on SQL Server 2005. Problem scenario is as follows: 1. a form is open that has downloaded dataset to local cache 2. computer is put into stand-by or hibernation 3. later, computer is brought out of stand-by or hibernation 4. when trying to save or close form, SQL exception comes up (remote system closed conn) I know this relates to connection pooling, but I am having a...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
