Remoting service won't start

We have a remoting service that runs fine on local development machines, but
throws the following error when attempting to start it on a Windows 2003
server:

"Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in
a timely fashion"

This error occurs in a fraction of a second. Does anyone know what might be
causing it?

I often see those kinds of errors in services because of things like
syntax errors in the App.config file, or in the constructor, or on init.

Check those areas, or use a Trace log file and next any questionable
code in a try/catch block.

I have set up a Windows service in VB.NET, and created a 'Service Manager' Windows Forms app that can 'get' information from that service. The service consists of the basic service 'framework' along with a large class that I wrote that actually does all the work. The Service Manager app uses .NET remoting to get info into/back from the service. I have a couple of questions that I need info on before I complete this service:

I have written a windows service and want to expose a web based user interface for this service. I then wrote a class library containing a ..net remoting server. The class library have a method named StartRemotingServer(). To be able to call this method from the windows service I need to reference the remoting class library, but for the class library to be able to access the internal structures of the windows service the class library...

Hi Ng! My application (version 1 a1) communicates with a service (version 1 s1). Now I would like to update the service and create a service version 2 (s2). The new function calls within s2 are implemented in a new interface, which derive from the old one to ensure that an old version of my application (a1) still works with s2. If i run my new version of the application a2 with s1 I get a InvalidCastException (Return argument has an...

Hello, What is the best way to stop a remoting server (Singleton SAO) that has been started with RemotingConfiguration.Configure(). For sure, I want to do this without quitting the application :-) In fact, at a given time based on an internal event, I would like to stop the remoting functionality within my process. Many thanks,

Hello all; I'm having a bit of trouble with .NET remoting. Here's my scenario: I have a "remotable" type which is served by a Windows Service. I have a WinForms app which consumes the remotable type. I'm using the Observer pattern, so the client registers with the server, and the server refreshes the client as appropriate (doing it this way because the server polls a device over the serial port, and will update any registered...

Hey I have some more questions with regards to Remoting in .NET 2. I'm using TCP with the Binary formatter. My solution consists of 4 projects: - Class Library containing the server classes which Inherits MarshalByRefObject (ok, at this stage it only contains one class... but its gonna grow) - Class Library containing common classes and interfaces that will be shared between all projects. This include interfaces for the server...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
