Visual Studio IDE Crashes

I recently installed VS.NET 2003

After opening a project and leaving it open, after a certain period of time
it crashes. It only does this when a project is open. The project that I've
tried this with is *very* small and simple. One of the boxes that are
displayed as part of the crashes references "devenv.exe " (the Visual Studio
IDE executable).

I've tried uninstall/reinstall. I have the latest .NET Framework SDK.

When I submitted the error report from the crash to Microsoft, the "more
info" link took me to the following page :
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response...289dc9&SID=796

Part of that page reads :
Error Caused By Merant, Inc.: No Specific Solution Found

Problem Description

An unknown error occurred in Version Manager IDE Client , created by Merant,
Inc..

Problem Resolution

Merant, Inc. currently does not have a solution for the problem that you
reported. Below is a list of recommendations to take that may help prevent
the problem from recurring.

I have noticed that on systems with limited amounts of memory, this seems to
be a real problem. I would test on another system to see if this is still an
issue.

Hopefully not the case here. I have 1gb RAM on a P4 1.5ghz.

I appreciate the response anyway.

I know I had major problems with the "download" version off the MSDN website.

I would uninstall and redownload.

Hi Michael, thanks again for responding.

I've already done 2 or 3 installs, using disks distributed via our MSDN
subscription. On the last attempt, I deinstalled VS and the .NET Framework
SDK, then reinstalled the SDK & then Visual Studio.

If you have access to the download version, I would try that. Perhaps try
installing on another machine to verify that the CD's are ok? I know these
answers are not exact, but VS has a habit of being problematic at times
during install and even after(Anyone check the "update" button!) :-)

I did check for updates -- none available.

I do have a co-worker who did install it. He hasn't had any problems but he
doesn't really use it. I'll ask him to try to reproduce my steps. What's
really weird is whether I'm doing something or just letting it sit there
"idle", it will crash after a certain amount of time. I haven't been able to
measure, but somewhere between 5 & 15 min.

Thanks again,

Steve D.

See, if I hit the update button it crashes my IDE....

To be honest.. I am at a complete loss.. I would call MS and see if they
know of any issue with your hardware and VS...

Good luck.

Hello there, We're having a some problems with Visual Studio 2003 at the moment. In a nutshell, devenv.exe terminates when trying to run our application after a full rebuild. After trying to track this down using Filemon.exe (from www.sysinternals.com) and debugging devenv.exe (in developer studio :)) using the Microsoft symbols (from the MS Symbol server), it appears that it crashes in mspdb71.dll when doing a full dependency check. ...
