Serializable Objects in Collections over a Web Service

Hello,

I am having some trouble with serializable objects being accessed over
a web service in VB.NET. What I am trying to accomplish is to have a
ProductDetail class that has a property named Colors that is a
collection of Color class objects indexed by the colorID. I have
tried this many different ways and the result is always the same:
everything compiles correctly at runtime, but when I attempt to access
my ProductDetail object via the web service I get an error about it
not being a serializable object.

I can use the Color class over the web service by itself without any
problems and can also use the ProductDetail class over the service as
long as I do not put collections of other objects into it. Is there
something that I do not know about this method of using objects via
web services? Can anyone provide an example of how to do this
properly?

Hi, As was pointed out whatever you return from a WebMethod needs to be serializable to SOAP. An ArrayList is not serializable. I will be needing to return other data types from web methods. Is there a document, or can some one list those types that are not serializable and the syntax for converting them? Thanks

When attempting to debug a webservice, I get the error: Cannot serialize member System.Exception.Data of type System.Collections.IDictionary, because it implements IDictionary. In reading about web services (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ds492xtk.aspx), the documentation states that exceptions will automatically be handled as a fault element in the message and then converted to a SoapException in the client.

I'm wanting to create a Wrapper (or Extender depending on how you look at it) for a Serializable object that I then want to send over a webservice. Basically I want to create a Serializable Object, which has some properties on it, but I want to make one of the Properties a generic type that I can assign one of multiple Serializable object. I've look at creating it using an XmlNode and an object but so far both appear to have issues. I've...

Has anyone come up with a slick way to make Custom Serializable Objects to behave like DataSets when using WebServices? What I'm looking for is some way to force the WSDL generated code to create a reference to my custom object's namespace instead of creating it's own copy of the object in it's own WS namespace. Either that, or some easy way to move all of the properties from the Custom Serializable Object into the WSDL generated object...

Hello. Hi. I'm writing a logging service that uses .NET remoting. The idea is that the service publishes an EventProcessor object that clients can access via .NET Remoting, passing it DiagnosticEvent objects for processing. I've altered the main program for the service slightly so that I can run it more easily as a "regular" application during debugging. I have an assembly that contains the "diagnostics" classes that do the work, the...

Hi, Disappointingly, I think I already know the answer to this question. I have a C# class which I'm effectively using as a storage area while I carry out a sequence of Web Method calls on a third party web service. The class stores the types returned from each call for the subsequent method call as they are designed to be done sequentially. I decided as part of my error handling to try and store the storage

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
