When I'm reading from or writing to a network socket, I want to use a
struct to represent the structured data, but must use an unsigned char
buffer for the call to sendto() or recvfrom().
I have two questions:
1. Is it generally safe to "overlay" the structure on the buffer,
e.g.:

I would like to check if I understand the following excerpt correctly:
6.2.5#26 (Types):
All pointers to structure types shall have the same representation and
alignment requirements as each other. All pointers to union types shall
have the same representation and alignment requirements as each other.
Does it mean that *all* structure (or union) types have the same
alignment?

I want to use memcpy to copy the contents of one struct to another
which is a superset of the original struct (the second struct has extra
members at the end). I wrote a small program to test this, and it
seems to work fine, but are there any cases where doing something like
this could cause any problems?

Hi,
we just run into the problem, that "default" alignment
in the project properies dialog seem to be different.
We have a project that's a DLL, which is linked with
a couple of LIBs. All are with the same solution. All
had "Default" set in the "Struct Member Alignment"
entry.

Hi friends,
i am having some trouble in my prog. with struct
member alignment. I have two different static libraries that i use,
each with "struct member alignment" set to 8 bytes. In my application
it has to be 2 bytes and when i terminate the my program i am getting
this error:
DAMAGE: after Normal block (#73) at 0x00323098.
When i changed the alignment to 2 bytes for both
libraries it run and terminated with out any errors. But one...

I'm taking an intro course on C++, and our teacher is not being
clear on how stuct memory padding is determined.
If the memory used by all components defined inside a struct
falls between a certain gradient, a struct "rounds up" to the
nearest multiple of the gradient.
This teacher is somewhat erratic and has said on subsequent days
that first the padding is rounded up to nearest multiple of 4,
and then the nearest power of 2.

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
