GCHandle / Delegate Design Guidelines

Greetings

I am writing some MC++ code to interoperate between a legacy C-languiage dll and C#. I need to specify a callback function to the managed portion for the dll to provide more detailed error reporting. The dll is an embedded database. Since this is error information that may occur at any time, the managed callback needs to be pined for a prolonged period of time. Are there any guidelines on how long a GCHandle or delegate can be pinned? I understand pinning disrupts the efficiency of the GC. I expect this managed callback to be available for the lifetime of the application.

All of the examples on MSDN and interop texts show examples of delegates or GCHandles used for relatively brief periods of time (length of a function call). Is the scenario I described above an expected use of pinning, or is there another way to approach the problem that I am not considering?

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I Wonder... Can a server-side class exposed through remoting expose a delegate? In other words: can a client set a server-side delegate that in-turn will be asynchronously called from the server on the client? Thanks, Nadav.

All the event handlers seem to pass an Object and an EventArgs object. If the event doesn't need this info why pass them anyway? It is inefficient.

Why can't you pin an enumeration? For example, the with the following code: public enum MyEnum : byte { ValueOne = 1, ValueTwo = 2 } public class MyClass {

I need to pass the address of a variableto some win32 API functions like RTLMoveMemory I noticed some weird behavior when pinning objects and using the handle's pointer to write data to the memory location. it seems as if after pinning an object the memory and the object are not updated at the same time anymore

Hi all, I want to understand more about how the pinvoke pinning process works. I'm writing some code that calls DeviceIoControl. DeviceIoControl provides a generic interface to device drivers. Its signature is deliberately open-ended so that it can be highly generic. Refer SDK for more. I want to access the drive geommetry of an SD-Card via

Hi, I'm coding up an application that has a native c++ layer, asynchronously calling callback in a CLI layer. We originally did this with static inline methods in the CLI layer, but this solution only works with singleton objects. So I have to explore other solutions. So beside pinning pointers, I've been looking at GCHandle. I was

Hi, I need to have a native class hold on to a managed function pointer. Not a unmanaged class in a manged block. I mean an unmanaged class in an unmanaged block via #pragma unmanaged. I'm wondering if GCHandle will be enough. I can't use gcroot because it's a #pragma unmananged so if I declare a gcrooted variable gcroot<ManagedDelegateInstance^pointer

I have a function to fill combo box items. I pass SQL query and combo box name as arguments. This function is located in another class. In my Form, I have declared a delegate to this function before the namespace as; public delegate void dFillItems(ObjectName as string, Query as string) On my Forms I have several combo boxes and get filled when they get focus. Is it proper to use delegate in this situation? Will it improve...

Hi, Can someone please explain to me something about delegates? My understanding is as follows. A delegate is basically an object that can hold a reference to a "method" somewhere. That is, it's essentially a pointer to a piece of code somewhere else in memory. It therefore (to me anyway) makes sense to define delegates with their signatures and be able to use those signatures at different points in

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
