why does this path work?

I am trying to recursively enumerate the contents of my Documents and
Settings folder. While doing this, I cam across the following:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Applicati on Data\Symantec\h pc\

This directory contains an empty file named " " (a single space)

The weird thing is that when I call Directory.Exist s on this path
(C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Applicati on Data\Symantec\h pc\ ), it
returns true! This is clearly not a directory, but Windows thinks it is. In
fact, I confirmed this is a problem in Windows by looking at the
implementation for Directory.Exist s, which turns "C:\Documen ts and
Settings\All Users\Applicati on Data\Symantec\h pc\ " into
"C:\Documen ts and Settings\All Users\Applicati on Data\Symantec\h pc\ \." and
then calls the Win32 API for getting file attributes.

When I look at "C:\Documen ts and Settings\All Users\Applicati on
Data\Symantec\h pc\ \." in the Windows shell, it shows me the "C:\Documen ts
and Settings\All Users\Applicati on Data\Symantec\h pc\" folder.

The short of the long is that I get stuck in an infinite loop trying to
recurse down into this directory. What's up with that!?

Normally, we wouldn't have a file named " " in Windows file system.
Obviously, the special file was created by Symantec for particular usage, I
guess, to protect virus access or something else. This brings an incorrect
result for Directory.Exist s in .NET. I think you may ignore this folder in
your application since they don't want us access it.

I think the .NET framework is great! It's nice, clean and logical; in contradiction to the old Microsoft. It only saddens me that the new Microsoft still doesn't under stand there own rules when it comes to file paths. A lot of Microsoft installers for example, and also installers of other companies, do not work because they handle paths in the following manner:

I am trying to <include> some text into an XML documentation topic, but that text is stored in a file that is in a different directory than the "current" XML file. Using a relative path does not appear to work, because the base being used is the Common7\IDE directory, not my original source directory. Here is the situation: MyApp directory contains the file Form1.cs, Form1.xml, and Generic.xml. There is also a subdirectory called...

I just reinstalled .NET 2003 (after repeated attempts to get ASP.NET Web Applications to work). I first did a complete uninstall of .NET 2003, .NET Framework 1.1, and IIS. I also completely deleted c:\inetpub\wwwroot and rebooted before reinstalling. I created a new virtual directory from within IIS (e.g. MyWebTest). Then I tried to create a new Visual C# ASP.NET Web Application pointing to the location http://localhost/MyWebTest. I get...

I've installed several different versions of Python across several different versions of MS Windows, and not a single time was the Python directory or the Scripts subdirectory added to the PATH environment variable. Every time, I've had to go through and add this by hand, to have something resembling a usable Python installation. No such problems on Linux, whether it be Mandrake/Mandriva, Fedora Core, or Kubuntu. So why is the Windows...

Many times when writing VBA code, we find the need to work with Files in one form or another. Whatever the process may be, we need to be sure that a File is present in a specified location. One Method to guarantee that a File does in fact exist, is to pass the Absolute Path to the File to a Function which will investigate the Path and return a Boolean Value (True/False) indicating whether or not the File exists. The following code segments will...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
