Configuration Management of a Composite Application

Ken
Our tool control applicatioin is currently comprised of a .NET part written
in C#, components written in C++ and a Lab View component. They are at
different version levels. Not all composite parts change with each version
of the product. The .NET and Lab View components are outsourced.
Some questions:
1) What are the recommended practices for managing a composite configuration
such as this?
2) Are there tools on the market that facilitate management?
3) Is a top level version number typically assigned to the composite?
Tpically, should the main UI show only this version or should it also show
the composite part versions as well?
4) Should this top level change whenever one or more of the composite parts
change?
5) How would the configuration be integrated with Install Shield?
6) Should there be an application that does nothing else but contain the top
level version number? Are there better mechanisms?

Thanks.

A sane document management approach: I manage my documents with a key, composed with some fields of my XML documents. When I have to refer to documents, I use a canonical form of the key so that I can use classical links such as <a href="..."> This canonical form is naturally an URN The problem when using URN, is that the sub-scheme must be registered, otherwise collisions may happen if somebody else decide to use the same name,...

Microsoft's Configuration Management Application Block (CMAB) allows me to specify which Configuration Storage Provider (CSP) to use in the application's config file. I am writing a .NET library which is used via non-.NET COM applications. Consequently there is no application config file because the host program is not a .NET program. The only way that I can see to specify which Configuration Storage Provider to use in this scenario is to...

Hi, I'm trying to integrate Microsoft's Configuration Management Application Block (CMAB), and have run into a bit of trouble. Would appreciate any input anybody could provide at this point. I simply keep running into exceptions when trying to integrate the block into my app. Here's what I've done thus far: 1. Installed the CMAB 2. Started a new C# project.

I was a Java developer so I'm used to using property files as a means to keep configuration settings for my apps. I'm wondering what options are there with ..NET? Some settings I want to include are like a root directory for a target program on the user's machine my app uses, which they would be prompted to supply at startup. Normally the registry is used for this but I'd rather not use the registry if possible. Isn't there some kind of...

I have an ATL composite control which I drop into a tab control dialog page of an MFC application. When I click on the composite control and then click anywhere outside the MFC application, the application immediately hangs! Spy++ indicates that the application is hanging on the WM_GETDLGCODE message. This problem does not happen if the ATL control is a standard (that is, non-composite) control, neither does it happen if the composite...

I posted a follow up to an earlier post but did not receive response so here it is again (with original post and response) > This could be because you are running the index service over this web > application. try to stop indexing this application (from IIS management > console, clear "Index this resource") or stop the index service to test if > you still get error or not. I removed this option but still get the error. The error...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
