Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB886903)

I currently have installed .NET Framework 1.1
(_not_ the SDK version, though) on a Win2K PC.

I am unable to apply the above-mentioned service pack
via Windows Update. In the middle of the update process,
Windows Installer informs that the update failed but
gives no reason. I downloaded the service pack and
tried to install it manually, but I have the same problem.

I think that the cause of all this is that I deleted
the Windows Installer for .NET Framework 1.1. using a
program called Windows Installer Clean Up that Microsoft
put out a while ago.

A logical way to solve this problem (I think) is to
uninstall .NET Framework 1.1, re-install it via
Windows Update, and then install Service Pack 1.
However, if I try to completely delete .NET Framework
1.1 using the Add/Remove utility, I get a message
stating that only installed programs can be uninstalled.
I can see the entry pertaining to .NET Framework 1.1 in
the Add/Remove utility but, again probably because the
installer was deleted, Add/Remove is unable to uninstall
it.

What could I do to rectify the situation?

I've been installing VS2008 and getting all the updates. Microsoft's update site says I need "Update for .NET Framework 3.0: x86 (KB932471)" but I've tried 4 times now to get it and it always end with an error "Error Code: 0x66A". I've googled this and it seems I don't need this update if I have .NET 3.5 installed and according to add remove...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. For...
