Private Data on USB stick

3 New Member
Hi everyone,

Great Forum.

I would like to create a database hosted on the net for my sporting club so that members can record their match scores and be able to review this data from their own homes.

Currently there is an Access database that has all this data on it in our club rooms and only a few of the committee members have access to this information. If I want to know how my scores are going I have to ask one of these people.

The whole Access database is kept on a USB stick and stored in the club safe.

My problem is that the committee members seem to be Internet phobic if that's the right term. They don't want private data on the internet, even if it is in a secured database.

What I would like to do is create the online database with UserID, LoginName, Password and scores. Then store the private data in a separate database on a USB stick and have my PHP scripts retrieve data from both data sources so the committee members can run their reports.

Is this possible and how would I approach this task.

I am not asking for specific scripts, just the method, I will work out the coding myself, It's all part of the learning experience.

I have searched and Googled for info on this topic but feel my terminology may be incorrect.
Can someone suggest what terms I could google?

Thanks and sorry my first post is so long.

As the private data already exists in Access I would leave it there.
PHP can communicate with Access using ODBC functions.
You would have to create an ODBC Data Source Object with the USB stick in place.(I am assuming this is all in Windows).
Your script could then transfer data to the Mysql via a php script from the Access DB.
You queries and script can then filter only the data required to appear on the website

Never thought about keeping Access, Can do.

@code green
Do you mean, Use the Access DB as a master and only send data in one direction to MySQL on the net?

If so, I was hoping to enter data into MySQL DB from any location and just use the private data to generate reports.

A lot of the info on the net tells me that I can connect too and query two MySQL databases at once, But they need to be on the same server.
They also state that MSSQL can talk to two servers at once but I'd rather stay with MySQL.

Thanks

I suggested keeping Access because I thought this would continue to be used by the committee.
And trying to keep two seperate databases in sync with each other is physically difficult.

If the idea is to abandon Access, then the USB stick would need all the MySQl files to run as a seperate database.
Along with the interface tools. Your committee would need the neccesary training to use the interface.

As for making the two MySql databases communicate with each other,
it shouldn't be a problem via a php script.
I have managed to do so across continents.

If you are thinking of doing JOIN queries on tables in two different databases, this is possible inside the same environment but I am not sure in your situation.

I would take the easier option of all inter database communication via php.

Thanks for the feedback Code Green,
I will try a few options out and post my findings in a week or so.
