Dear Sql Server experts:
First off, I am no sql server expert :)
A few months ago I put a database into a production environment.
Recently, It was brought to my attention that a particular query that
executed quite quickly in our dev environment was painfully slow in
production. I analyzed the the plan on the production server (it
looked good), and then tried quite a few tips that I'd gleaned from
reading newsgroups. Nothing worked....

For an unavoidable reason, I have to use row-by-row processing
(update) on a temporary table to update a history table every day.
I have around 60,000 records in temporary table and about 2 million in
the history table.
Could any one please suggest different methods to imporve the runtime
of the query?

My application fetches a batch of data through a web service and writes 1000
entities per batch to a SQL Server 2000 database. There are 4 tables in
every batch. There are the following number of SQL commands executed per
average of every batch;
Table #1: always 1
Table #2: 5
Table #3: 5

Hi,
(V8.1 Fp2)
Our application uses JDBC batch to execute mutiple insert statements
and we saw a strange thing this morning.
There were 4 SQL Insert statements in the batch, and we know the 2nd
would have
violated a Unique Constraint and failed, but the SQL error returned
was related to the 3rd statement (which had a FK dependent on the 2nd

consider the following hypothetical (it isn't but....)
- start with a COBOL/VSAM codebase that's REALLY old
- end with both a COBOL/VSAM and a COBOL/DB2 system which differs in only
where the data lives. code, including copybooks, remains the same.
mostly the system does periodic (daily/weekly/<etc>) batch runs.
the VSAM order file has 99 line items. this gets converted to an
Order table with 99 line_items.

The ETL application loaded around 3000 rows in 14 seconds in a Development
database while it took 2 hours to load in a UAT database.
UAT db is partitioned.
Dev db is not partitioned.
the application looks for existing rows in the table...if they already
exist then it updates otherwise inserts them.
The table is pretty large, around 6.5 million rows.

The bulk inserts/updates are done in batches of 50K. I am facing a very peculiar performance issue with regard to these bulk operations.
