At the risk of sounding like a Big 5 consultant, "It
depends".
1) Strongly typed datasets rock, they are faster than
untyped, use intellisense... but your reason for
wanting to use them is important. I use them every day
of my life, but I also don't use them every day of my
life and there are reasons for both.
2) How much of your process is dependent on reads vs.

I'm a long time VB6/ADO and Java developer new to ADO.NET. I'm trying
to decide on best practices and I'd appreciate any assistance. I have
one specific question and another more general architectural one:
1. How can you pass around a disconnected DataSet/DataTable, make
changes to it and then pass it into a component for update? The
disconnected DataSet doesn't know it's UPDATE statement and the
DataAdapter is long since gone.
2....

I have had a form within a project that has been tested
and working for the past 4-5 months. The other day, I
decided to change all of my database connection strings
into a dynamic property for a few reasons.
All was OK until testing a particular form, and I got a
strange error when opening it whilst running, and I got
an exception stating that the dataset I was using to fill
a table was not initialised.

I'm developing an VB.NET Windows Forms application that uses CR for VS.NET
(original version shipped with VS.NET 2002 - my VS.NET has the latest SP
installed, no SPs for CR).
My reports get their data from ADO.NET Datasets that are pre-populated by
other modules of the application.
What I need to do is to use these datasets as the datasources of my reports.
Fine, I know how to do that and it works perfectly on my development box.
The...

Is there any tool that generates Typed DataTables rather than Typed
Datasets? The trouble we are having is we have quite a few tables in
our database and a single table can be a part of more than one dataset.
If we use the XSD.Exe, the datatable definitions are repeated in every
dataset they appear in; causing our data definition layer to bloat.
Let us say there is a database table called Account which appears in
two dataset definitions...

I have a set of typed datasets that are tied to a database on a mssql2005
server. They are naturally displayed and available in the DataSources
window. Now I want to rename the database, but when I do that and
reconfigure any of the datasets with the Wizard, all the datatables I have
previously selected are marked as unavailable (with a red x next to it), and
displays all database objects in the renamed database as "new" and
unchecked.

Hello,
I'm in a front of very serious .net redesign/rewrite of an old VB6
application.
I had been asked to make it .NET 2.0 and would like to ask couple of
questions regarding data access as this application is heavily data-centric
around MSDE database.
Would it be better to use custom business objects or extend

Hi all,
This post is sort of tangentially related to my earlier posts on
configuration files for DLLs.
Does anyone know how to create typed DataSets using VS2005's new DataSet
designer, but with the ability to configure the connection string via a
config file? The designer seems to hard-code the connection string into the
dataset itself, which just can't be right.

I'm trying to decide if it is better to use typed datasets or business
objects, so I would appreciate any thoughts from someone with more
experience.
When I use a business object to populate a gridview, for example, I loop
through a datareader, populating an array list with instances of a custom
class in the middle tier, and then send the array list up to the
presentation layer and bind the gridview to it.
If I use a typed dataset, I...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

The next Access Europe User Group meeting will be on Wednesday 1 May 2024 starting at 18:00 UK time (6PM UTC+1) and finishing by 19:30 (7.30PM).
In this session, we are pleased to welcome a new presenter, Adolph Dupré who will be discussing some powerful techniques for using class modules.
He will explain when you may want to use classes instead of User Defined Types (UDT). For example, to manage the data in unbound forms.
Adolph will...

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
