Alright, I've been searching around for some time and have not been
able to find anything concrete on fixing an issue I am having. Here's
the situation:
1) I have a non-anonymous webservice running on a w2k3ee sp1 server
2) I am behind a corporate firewall, but was able to get our network
services group to punch a hole at port 80 through....

Hi all,
A Windows service (which obviously starts before any user logs in) is
failing to:
- read something from registry from a key under the HKCU
- try to find out the user path by doing the following call:
SHGetFolderPath(NULL, CSIDL_APPDATA, NULL, SHGFP_TYPE_CURRENT, path)
if any of these is tried before a user logs in.
My question...

Hey all,
Requesting help from the VB.Net gurus in here. I was given a task to write
a Windows Service (VB.Net) that would run an external program, and if that
program closed for any reason (other than the service being stopped) it
would restart it. I have written the service to do just this, and for
testing purposes I am running the...

I have a program that works just fine as a windows program. I took an object
from it and put it in a service. This object uses MessageQueueing. When I
try and start up the app I get the following error message in the event log:
Service cannot be started. System.Messaging.MessageQueueException:
Access to Message Queuing system is denied.

Hi All,
I've been trying to build a Ruby-on-Rails plus MySQL application. I'm
running Ruby 1.8.2, Rails 1.1.4 and MySQL 5.0.15-nt over
WinXP-Pro/SP2. I run under an Administrative account.
I tried building the first example from Agile Web Development with
Rails, 1st ed. Somehow the DB got corrupted and I couldn't recover.
Instead of...

I am writing a service that monitors when a particular app is started.
Works, but I need to get the user who is currently logged in, and of course
Environment.UserName returns the service logon (NT_AUTHORITY\SYSTEM).
I understand that when the service starts, no user may be logged in, but
that's ok, as the app I am monitoring can only be run...

I'm hoping someone can give me a little guidance. I have written a
simple Windows Service that goes out and scrapes a few web pages and
updates some data in an access database. The service works correctly
in the IDE and trying to be a good citizen I set it to run as "Local
Service" when I install it.
However once installed it fails...

Yes, sorry I tried to make it clear in the original question that I want to
get the user token of the service - ie. the account the service is running
under. I know services don't have user tokens - I suspect users do have
tokens, hence "user token", otherwise we might call them "service tokens" or
somesuch :-)
If you read the question...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For...

With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then...
