I've tried this with both the RPM's and the source code and I have the
same problem.
I'm running Slackware Linux v8.1, and on the last attempt I built mysql
from the source code by doing the following: (after unzipping the tarball)
../configure --prefix=/usr/local/mysql
make
make install

I've experienced this a couple of times on different Windows
workstations and it's driving me crazy. I've installed mysql-4.0 from
the installer to c:\mysql. Then just for kicks I try to start it by
double clicking mysqld-nt.exe. It opens a window and hangs for about
15 seconds then closes. So i opened a command prompt and ran it, same
thing. I've discovered that if I put anything on the command line as

I just installed Slackware 10.1 Still need to install some missing
needed libraries, but I think that's unrelated.
Every time it boots up, or I try "/etc/rc.d/rc.mysqld start" I get
this:

I Installed mysql-max-5.0.18-0.glib23.rpm on suse Enterprise 9 which
has nss_ldap.rpm installed.
my mysql-max-5.0.18-0.glib23.rpm is dynamically linked with glib23 and

When I ran version 4, mysql would start as many mysqld process as it
needed. This would vary depending upon how busy it was. As a lay
perosn I will refer to this as the threading model.
I have upgraded to version 5 and notice that no matter what it only
runs 1 mysqld. Everything seems to work fine, but I want to make sure
that mysqld is taking advantage of my multiple processors. Has the

Hello,
I'v installed mysql 5.0
(MySQL-server-standard-5.0.27-0.rhel4.i386.rpm) on RedHat AS4.
When I start mysql through command line (i.e. /usr/bin/mysqld_safe
--datadir=/var/lib/mysql --pid-file=/tmp/mysql.pid & ), everything is
ok. But when I use "service mysql start" command launch it, mysql just
quit silently.

I am really stuck with the following problem and I have tried
