Pitfalls for upgrading: 3.23 => 4.1

Dear newsies,

My ISP has offered to upgrade my servers from 3.23 to 4.1.

I'm excited by the potential gains in performance, and the ability to
write subqueries, but am wary of any forward incompatibiliti es. I have
a mass of PHP code with MySQL throughout. I don't relish peeking into
every file and making a determination of 'it should work' by eyeballs
alone.

What do I need to watch out for? Or where can I find a nice summary of
differences between the versions?

Thanks!

Read these upgrade guides:
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/Up...-from-4.0.html
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/Up...from-3.23.html

You can read the changes in 4.0 and 4.1 here:
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/News-4.1.x.html
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/News-4.0.x.html

I'd suggest googling through newsgroup archives for other folks' stories
about upgrading. I tried one search for simply "mysql" "upgrade" and
found a bunch of hits. Many of the issues are probably already noted in
the Upgrading web pages above.

And, though this should already be in place, create and verify backups
of your databases first!

Regards,
Bill K.

Hi, We have a major ASP app that we are in the process of upgrading to ASP.NET 1.1 and probably on to ASP.NET 2.0 in the middle of next year. (We will also be upgrading to SQL2K5 at the same time). The current architecture is heavily based on the client side, both for validation and data access. The asp page is returned and then data is...
