Is there a way to extend PHP features, like adding new database
connectivity module, java interoperability etc. without recompiling PHP ?
I need a UNIX/Linux solution, something like dropping .so file in
certain directory.
I am not a hobbist, and I do not have root priviledge at my customers site.
My customers are not always capable to recompile PHP themselves, and it
causes me problems.
I am considering moving to Java/JSP/Velocity...

How do I get PHP to tell the server that when I echo text to the
screen, I need for the text to be sent as UTF-8? How does Apache know
the right encoding when all the text is being generated by PHP? If I
build a content management system (I have) and I make sure that all
input is encoded as UTF-8, how will the
server know that the text in the MySql database is UTF-8?

I have been using the charset windows-1252 for a while, but it was
pointed out to someone else in this group recently that it's a
Microsoft creation (I'm sure I'm getting my facts wrong or skewed) and
therefore not good for cross-platform browsing.
Anyway, I am beginning my road to recovery (ie, breaking my addiction
to authoring only for IE) and I would like to know what is the
preferred charset?

Someone just drew attention to an open bug report in Apache concerning
shipping with an AddDefaultCharset set by default in httpd.conf.
This leads to bogus charsets being served in many cases.
I've just put forward a suggestion, but I'd welcome review from those
familiar with character encoding issues and CA-2000-02 (which is the
main argument in favour of the current behaviour).

I understand that <br /> is marginal in CSS, and so am looking for a
substitute for the EOL character. I've failed in both approaches and
seek advice.
The first thing I tried was to use the unicode EOL characer, which is
000A. I figured with was 10 in decimal notation, and so tried:

No go. What was wrong with my thinking here?

I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
