Printing Labels - Specify Starting Position

2 New Member
Greetings,

I'm a Draftsman / IT at a thriving custom cabinet business. We use high dollar ($600 per 1000) labels (52 per sheet) as a means of keeping track of each piece of the cabinet during construction. Our database is set up to allow a user to pull up an order, generate the parts list, and then print the labels for that order. Unfortunately, not every order uses a complete sheet of labels. In fact, it is not uncommon for an order to have just one label, thus wasting 51 labels. Sure, we ask the shop to return as many sheets as possible with numerous labels remaining so that we can reuse these sheets. This is cumbersome and the sheets don't always come back in the best of shape to be laser printed again.

My question: Can the database be coded to allow the user to select the label position before the job prints? If so, sample code would be greatly appreciated. Also, is there a way to code the database to accumulate multiple label print jobs in some type of spooler and then later print the multiple job as one job??

Any ideas or suggestions... or am I dreaming :|

To start; the database has no programmable interface, it is just storage for data. Any programming handling the is done outside the database.

As you put it you don't even need a database for that. All you need to know (establishing that a sheet has 52 labels and the user always will use the first free label on a sheet) is the last used number in a (say) 13x4 matrix numberd 1 to 52. You can write that a a 'normal' flat file.

But some questions remain:
Why do you let the user choose the label number? Why not give the user the next label number in this system? Because, e.g. a user might not pick the first free label no 25, but 35.

You could 'spool' the print requests and store the print output in a file or database. But you'll need some user interaction to actually 'release' the spool and start the print.

If I talk gibberish, then I don't understand it and you'll have to explain a bit more.

Thank you, Ronald, for your reply and better insight of the database. I recently came upon some code for an Access DB that pretty much did what I was looking for. It seemed that all one had to do was copy and paste his code somehow (I forget the details how) to an Access DB and a pop up box would appear before printing labels asking for a starting label position. I was hoping that something similar could be done with a MySQL DB. My reasoning behind this is to re-insert to the tray the label sheet from previous order and begin printing from the next available label on that sheet (instead of inserting a new sheet with every order). In this way, label waste is kept to a minimum. You mentioned that it's possible to 'spooI' the print requests to a file and then later realease the file for printing. In my opinion, this seems like a very nice way to get the desired result; that is, if after you released the file for printing, all of the print requests could be batched into one print request and print consecutive without having to start a new sheet with each job request spooled. If printing in this way is possible, please elaborate further. You're insight is very much appreciated.

And, BTW, You're not the one talking gibberish here, Ronald, my ignorance shows who really is :|

Well, you can keep your data, such as the last label number, in a MySQL table.

But what I am curious about is the actual printing. What do you mean when you say "printing". Is that the process of actual putting the ink on the labels, or is that making some sort of print output file, that is stored on a stick and send to the printing dept. for the actual ink job.

And is this printing, as started by the user, done via a program on a PC?

You see, there are just more questions.

My program right now generates USPS style shipping label using System.Drawing.Graphics. It works fine except that the printer prints really slowly. I want to make my program take advantage of true type fonts. So I assume it's possible to send Font Type and the text to the printer, and the printer should digest and print faster. Still, barcode info needs to be sent as an image. When I print fifty copies of the same label it prints really...

I have a database which will be printing out labels for SMALL test tubes (1/4" high). We have yet to find a reasonably-priced printer (labelwriter) which can effectively print this on ROLLS of labels....due to slippage, soon you have the printout missing the label. So we are thinking that we have to use sheets of labels. HOWEVER, one job may need 15 labels, another may need 8, etc. Does anyone have a solution for how to set this up in...

I print mailing labels out of Access 2000 databases about 3 to 4 times a week. I have been having problems with one thing since I have been printing mailing labels. I print mailing labels by using a report I created and then printing them on a continuous-feed dot matrix printer. I used the Label Wizard, chose the query I created, picked the 'Avery USA 4146' (1 7/16" x 4") - 3 across, paper size: 'Fanfold 358mm x 12 in', and Printer:...

I C# code prints very slow as compared to a third party barcode printing software. That software prints approximately 10 labels in 2 seconds while my C# code prints 10 labels in 5 to 6 seconds. And this differences increases with the increase number of labels. The code is as follwods: Here rdr = OleDbDataReader Font is Times New Roman, 12pt

I am converting an old application that was printing directly to a specialized printer device (i.e. a special label printer). It was doing this by opening a file with the file path of 'LPT1:' and then using PRINT # to print directly to the printer device. Obviously, this is not going to work under VB.NET - StreamWriter won't let you open a device like LPT1: and such. I assume I am going to have to switch to the System.Drawing.Printing...

Hi, I know Access allows for easy construction of a report setup to print labels from a table/query, etc. I've done that one. It works pretty well for what I need. However, is there an example anywhere that someone can point me to that is more flexible? And, I mean flexible in this regard:

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
